Rusty brakes?

My RX-8 has rust on the brakes -- not the discs, but the brakes. What's up with this?

Rotary Nut 05-09-2004 07:56 PM

That is normal.

viggen 05-10-2004 05:57 PM

Rusty brakes

Normal for what? I've never seen thios on any car I've owned before, nor on the cars produced by companies I've worked for -- Saab, Jag, Ferrari/Maserati.

Shouldn't this be a warranty item?

Again, its not the discs, but the rotors...

Rotors?? Inside part of it?

RX-8 friend 05-10-2004 09:19 PM

The RX-8 rotors are plated and usually only rust where the pads scrub them. The calipers are painted black, but it's rather thin to allow heat to escape, I presume, so they may rust a bit in corrosive environments.

You need to tell us in more detail where you are seeing the rust.

SiMplyBluE 05-10-2004 09:30 PM

Or better take pictures and post them.

Not unless you buy some black paint and spray it on:D

The calipers are coated with a greenish anti-corrosion material.

mysql101 05-10-2004 09:39 PM

greenish anti corrosion? I thought they did that just for the looks.

Gyro 05-10-2004 09:50 PM

Here you go....

green colored brakes. No black paint to be found.....:(

MadDashRX8 05-10-2004 11:48 PM

What I get from the pic is that the surface of the rotor where the pads meet the surface have turned a little orange. I get this SEVERLY after each wash. Quick fix right after washing is to drive the car for a little while; I drag the brake pedal ever-so-slightly, as to create a little friction at that point and dry off the rotor. Comes back silver as can be. If I don't dry it in that manner, the next morning I have to break the pads loose; feels like I still have the parking brake set. (Strange feeling...)

Gozilla 05-12-2004 08:13 PM

Perhaps he means the center of the brake. All 4 of mine have terrible rust in the centers . Ive only had the car for a week and a half and this has been my only complaint thus far. My dealer wants me to bring it in so they can have a look see but as of yet I havent been able bring it in. I may just paint them when I go ahead and paint the calipers, which by the way are not black;)

mysql101 05-12-2004 08:15 PM

yeah, the rotors and calipers are my biggest beef with the rx-8, they should not be looking this fugly!

They also create a ton of dust, making my wheels constantly dirty.

TPNova1 05-12-2004 08:54 PM

This is all very true...I was not happy with the color or appearance of the rotors/brake assembly.-Until I painted the rotors black (inside part) and the calipers red with G2...The outcome in awesome and really makes the rest of the car!

Kaliken 05-12-2004 09:48 PM

hey TPNova1 can you post a pic??

i was thinking of painting my calipers as well and since you have the same car color as me i wanted to see how it looks.

mysql101 05-12-2004 09:59 PM

Poor pic, but the red calipers = 5 coats.

The rotor has 4 coats of black around the center area that rusts, as well as the outer edge.

I'll have to snap some better pics one of these days. The problem is, anytime I wash the car and it's ready for pics, the water makes the exposed rotor area turn rusty orange, and I no longer want to take a pic of it..

Kaliken 05-12-2004 10:08 PM

cool! thanks.. do you have another pic from a bit farther away?

just something to get an idea what the red would look like on the silver.

i am just worried a bit on the the red calipers and the silver.. yeah i know I am anal..

TPNova1 05-12-2004 10:12 PM

Check it red calipers on Silver

HEY, you're quite welcome......

TPNova1 05-12-2004 10:13 PM

Close up....

TPNova1 05-12-2004 10:14 PM

mysql101 05-12-2004 10:14 PM

It is funny you ask. The red does stick out - and draw attention to them. HOWEVER, keep in mind the rear of the car has lots of red from the tail lights, and so even a monochromatic silver car ends up looking very sharp even with the red calipers because it all goes together.

I would not recommend trying the same thing with yellow, for example, because there is no other yellow on the car.

Kaliken 05-12-2004 11:01 PM

thanks guys!!

i was debating either the black with maybe polaks red rx-8 template or straight red.

looks great thanks again!!

mysql101 05-12-2004 11:11 PM

If I were you, I'd paint the calipers silver, then use the stensil, and paint the rest of the calipers red.

it looks very sharp like that

TPNova1 05-13-2004 05:52 AM

hmmm, interesting , I never thought of it that way.

Yanje 05-13-2004 06:50 AM

I got a red 8

would it look better to paint the calipers red or black?

rx8spiritR 06-26-2004 02:03 AM

also does that mean the more coast you apply the better it looks? or it will last longer? or more shiny? I am planning to color my calipers soon. but i don't know which brand and coast I should apply.

TPNova1 06-26-2004 10:11 AM

The G2 paint is the best I've heard of so far. It's very popular for calipers and yes, it seems that you only need 2/3 coats or so to make it very shiny, which it already will be. Thats the idea behind G2 anyhow, a bright clear color.

Kwullen 06-26-2004 11:44 AM

Just remember, the more coats of paint you put on the calipers, the more heat they will retain and the easier they will boil the fluid. Baaaaaaadddd experience! It's not nice to boil your brake fluid, it makes for really nasty front end body damage and a very upset insurance agent!

spank1 06-27-2004 12:19 AM

my rotors were scoured and rusty when i got my 8 complained
and dealer replaced rotors and pads

Jeffjett 06-27-2004 05:47 PM

Hey viggen:

Do you see this in both the front and rear wheels, or the rears only?

Reason I ask is the only place I get it is in the rear. When I had my wheels removed to be chromed, I noticed the interior of the rear shaft nut was very rusty, and the rust runs down and gets on the interior of my rims. WTF !!!

My car was made in 2/04. and I have only had it for two weeks. I am taking it back to the dealer to see wassup.
