I actually did one day - the Eclipse I drove had a metal Greddy Trust **** that would get extremely hot and extremely cold. Doesn't look good if a cop catches a glimps though.

its happened to me. however, i dont wear any rings...my wear has begun on the back point of the rotor shape, apparently just from my palm. it doesnt bother me too much, but it is a little unsightly. i would get a new/different **** but i have always loved the design of the original.

^ the lighted one has the same design - looks & numbers. I like it, but I am still undecided about it. Maybe a little too much. I dinged my **** within a week of buying my8. Then I got in my8 and dented the shifter, too.

You're gonna go blind if you keep rubbing your ****!

I have an '04 and my shift **** still looks perfect. I have noticed that the dealer has damaged some things while in their care. Now I always inspect my car before I leave their property.

At the very least, I would send a letter to the service manager and owner of the dealership.

You're probably right - you can't expect them to replace the dash, pass-through and everything else unless some heads really roll, but I'd be outraged.

Just a quick update: I brought my car back to the dealership to have a cracked defroster switch replaced and they actually messed up the dash worse. This time it was screwdriver indentations and scratches along the side of the radio, center air vents, and piano black radio face. Also, a tab on one of the trim pieces was broken such that the panel stuck out permanently. The service manual is evidently a little used resource there. So I had a quick, reasonable discussion with the service manager and they took care of everything with no hesitation. A few days later I had a complete new dash, new radio, new trim piece, new sliding console cover and they replaced my non-functional key fob to boot. I was told that the dash replacement wasn't all that difficult. They did a good job (eventually anyway - I won't discuss all the intermediate nonsense) and I no longer have any damage or rattles. The shift **** remains scuffed, however -- now that I know it's normal wear, it doesn't bother me as much and I didn't pursue it any further.

Group buy opportunity?

There must be enough people with worn shift **** to warrant a group buy.

Any dealers interested?

I'm on **** #2 because of the wearing on the silver part. I tried to compensate on the second one by not leaving my hand on the shifter while I'm driving and now #2 is wearing on the opposite side. Doh!

Amusing thread.

Seriously, though, how does it come to pass that a shifter ****'s finish wears off that much with regular usage?

soft, crappy materials. My scratch is still minimal - but I don't have my hand over the top very often.
