Just a quick update.
Got the car back after the new engine and clutch install.
All I paid for was the clutch. Disc clutch $236. Cover. $296.
Upon starting the car for the first time with the new engine I was completely shocked at how smooth this car is supposed to run. I got so used to the sputtering, rough idle, and shaking that I completely lost site of how smooth a Rotary is supposed to be.
So the new engine combined with the new clutch makes this practically a brand new car for me. It runs like a dream.
The new engine also sounds a million times better.
In final, this whole process was quite interesting.
MazdaUSA also paid for my rental car costs.
I'm quite happy.
Thanks for reading everyone.

I'll give it a few hundred miles before I even consider pushing the RPM's past 6 grand though.
But with how this baby sounds with a fresh engine, it will be hard to resist!!

by the way... here's the complete list of parts that were replaced.
So as you can see (this is the official invoice I received from the dealership) that the engine is indeed a remanufacture. But I could hardly tell based on the performance.
It's only day two. We'll see how she behaves over the next couple weeks.
- Clutch Rel. Collar
- Bearing, Needle
- Oil Seal
- Ring, 'O'
- Gasket Set, Engine
- Gasket, Ex. Manifold
- Eng, Reman. , No Gskts
- SAE 5w-20 SUP PR MTR
- Filter, Oil
- Spark Plug Set
- Mazda Coolant - Short Engine R&R
- Pilot Bearing - R&R

THanks for posting everything along the way Mox - it helps the rest of us with rough idel problems. Now I'm sure mine isn't as bad as yours, so maybe there is hope for me yet. Although I am on my 4 set of motor mounts in 9K miles and it looks like I am in the process of breaking another set.
