Rotary makes turbine sounds at high revs??!

So i only had this car for about a month now. It has about 1600 miles. So i think its safe to say its broken in. Ok so i'm crawling in 2nd gear at about 2000 RPM. i give it the gas pedal gradual increase.....and i'm off shooting to 7000 RPM. Somewhere between 2000-7000 RPM, i hear this turbine sound!!!!! haha. Coming from a VW 1.8T. i was thinking huh?! i never heard this sound before! I'm like my car sounds like it has a turbo?! (i know it doesn't )

Is this a normal sound, it sounds jet like turbine?? maybe i didn't realize it before but haha I want to rev it again. I think i may have realize this sound finally because my stereo was off. So does the rotary actually make turbine sounds at high revvs?? All i know is that sound is addicting. So smooth too!

hahaha.. after taking a test drive in one and letting the SoB redline I was hooked. Its addictive to say the least, you most likely didnt notice it because of the breakin period. Enjoy the ride and just remember to add in oil every so often haha.

It's best when you wind it out, with the windows down, next to an SUV. If they have their window down, you get a funny look out of the deal as well.

I describe it to people who haven't heard it as a cross between and jet engine and a vacuum cleaner.

You should hear the RX8 on the dyno - it does sound like a jet !

Definitely the smoothest engine in a car I have ever driven! I love it!

Do you guys get a metallic rattle noise at certain RPM's? I'm assuming it's the intake system doing it's thing...

Agreed.....I've never been in a smoother ride in my life. It's amazing that regardless what RPM you're in (3,000 or 8,000) the engine still runs the same. If it weren't for the tach or the sound of the engine, it would be impossible for one to judge if the engine was being strained. It really does seem like the engine could be run at 15,000 RPMs, regardless if it's true or not.

I freakin love the car. The performance, style, comfort and the fact that no other car in the world that is being produced has this type of engine, the car amazes me every day that I drive it. I love the sound of the engine, too.....no deep rumble, just a very classy turbine sound that lets you know and everyone else on the road know you're in an unconventional type of vehicle.

Yeah, I get it around 7,000 RPMs. I know that the system opens up at 3 different times as the RPM's increase. I was a little worried about the noise at first, but it's just the car doing it's thing.

it took you A MONTH to finally hear the beauty that is the sound of the rotary engine? boy you must be driving it like a grandma during break-in

well now that it's broken in, make sure you REDLINE it at least once a day! rotaries NEED to be revved to stay healthy!!!

Yeah I do, at 7300 RPMs, all the way to 8000. It's the intake ports opening...search for 'SDAIS'. It seems to not be a problem after spending a lot of time on the forums asking people and have my dealership check it out, but I wish I didn't have to hear it. I can also cruise at exactly 66 mph on the highway, and if there's not much traffic around and if I turn the music off I can hear it (about 3250 RPMs). Goes away if I cruise at 67 mph.

The sound of the rotary at 9000+ RPMs is where the party's at, even though the power starts to drop after 8500ish.

It sounds like an effing rotary - and that's a good thing.

Hell, I'm a Harley rider / Dodge Ram Hemi driver and it still sounds good to me .

Unfortunately, I do not know of any way to increase the engine noise projecting from the front of the vehicle.

yep...one of the coolest parts about a rotary engine...your car gets to sound like a freakin' aircraft. it's such a beautiful noise. :D

it'll only sound better after adding RP's axial flow SC...now /that/ I'm looking forward to...someday.

Leave it around 3500-4200 in 3rd and tell me if the whirring noise that will occasionally pop up...is not even sexier than the jet sound itself

yes, the vehicle sounds like a really technologically advanced machine of some sort. ^_^

also, additionally, regarding the video: in it's simplicity, that may be one of the best RX-8 vids I've ever seen. :D

HAHA, actually i've redlined it before and i bring it to high revs atleast once a day after its been warmed up, i think its because i have my stereo mid level that i dont quite pay attention to the sound of the rotary, i think i had my stereo at volume 3 yesterday and i finally heard that turbine sound. haha. I love it. i get excited and suprised each time i drive the RX-8!

I think it sounds like a cross between a highly tuned 4cyl Lotus Esprit engine and a supercharged engine haha. Its kind of exotic now i think about it since i let my friend drive it around an empty parking lot.

I definitely feel bad for the car when i'm stuck in crawling traffic, i just want to wind it out LOL. i def need to hit a track day and stretch its legs out some more.

I don't think I turned the stereo on for 2 weeks after buying the car. Someone had told me to get used to driving the rotary, shift by sound instead of RPM because of the higher operating range and power band. I have to get the exhaust warmed up before it really sounds good and, sadly, that's usually as I am cruising in my neighborhood to my driveway with no place to really let it loose.

The thing is if you shift by sound haha, its very hard to determine when the rotary straining. I mean unless your waiting for the beep sound to shift lol. But 9000 RPM sounds like 6000 RPM IMO. One time i was gunning it to merge and i didnt even know i was hittin 8500 RPM until the beep sounded. thats how smooth the engine is. But I love the sound. I think i'm going to go home with the stereo on low again. Rotary is its own soundtrack haha.

Yep. Many times I have "discovered" that I'd been cruising down the freeway in 4th gear for many minutes... the engine just doesn't give any sign of strain, right up to... well.... many rpm.
