Rev to 4k Then Shut-off?
The Mazda service advisor told me today that every time I turn off the car to rev it up to 4,000 RPM, then shut it off with the revs up there. Any thoughts?

You do not need to do this unless the engine is cold(or not up to opertaing temp).
There are a ton of threads on this. Convention wisdom here is that if the car isn't up to temp, then rev to 3k and turn the car off, otherwise, just shut it off(if warm). Me.........I just go for a spin around the block when it's cold, even if I need to just move it for some reason. |
I never did it. Two 8's and 140,000 miles. Never flooded. That;s what the dealer is concerned with.

you only have to rev it still @ 3,000 or 4,000 rpm to warm it up, cause if you don't warm to mid temp. you're going to flood it

Can't hurt. Just a good habit to get into in case there is a day when you have a brain fart and shut it off cold by mistake. I never shut my car off cold and I have the BHR kit and I still do this out of habit.

no need, there is however a way to warm up the car enough so it won't flood that involves this though.

If you do this procedure, and the needle isnt half way .. do you still shut it off,... cause i doubt reving it at 3k for about 10 seconds will make the needle reach half way... stupid question i know lmao

Someone correct me if I am wrong but the reason people rev to 3 or 4k when its cold and they have to move the car from say the driveway into the garage is because when you start the car theres more gas than is needed in the combustion chamber so it just clears it all out by reving? Hence why it can flood. So once you do that it *should* be ok to just turn off.

When not fully warmed and I need to shut down (which is rare) I rev to 3k, hold there for 10 seconds, and then shut down. In theory to dissipate excess fuel and thereby prevent flooding. Can't hurt, and I've never flooded.

i always wait till the temp is half way then shut... never had a problem with this routine

I don't do anything special when I shut down the car. I even shut down after moving from the driveway to the street parking. I've never had a problem with flooding. On of my RX7's may have flooded once, but I'm not sure of that. It's been a long time ago.

The actual procedure is described in the Quick Tips booklet, and I think (not completely sure) on the DVD. Not everyone has those. You'd think that a service advisor at a dealer might have learned it, but I guess not.
Revving to 3K isn't a substitute for warming the engine before shutting it off. It's what you should do if you warmed it by idling instead of driving. Ken |
revving the engine when you want to shut it off cold is to prevent gas flooding the engine, not 100% sure but it makes sense
I saw the dealer rev it and turn it off let it spin down with no throttle so no gas gets injected and everything gets pushed out of the engine. |
Just to clear something up here. SO this procedure ISNT a susbtitute for driving around and warming it up or leting it up warm up by idling right? LIke by doing this procedure you arent in fact warming up the car right ? So confused lol

Short trip driving procedure For any trip that is too short for the engine to reach normal operating temperature, (needle in middle of temperature gauge indicates normal temperature), the following procedure should be followed**: 1. Start engine 2. Move vehicle 3. Warm engine for 5-minutes at idle 4. Raise engine speed to 3000 RPM for 10-seconds 5. Return to idle 6. Turn off engine |
The dealer in Norman, OK told me this exact same thing yesterday. Her reasoning was to "push the carbon out of the engine" but then again she told me I needed to "drive this car like I stole it" so I didn't know what to think.

You basically do need to drive it like you stole it. Makes for a happier rotary engine. When I called mazda one time they told me the rx8 'has the heart of a race car, and needs to be driven as such' which blew me away, a company telling me to drive like that lol. I'm only to happy to follow their directions though.
