Removing the resonator. Pros and Cons

I wanted to remove my resonator but i dont want to hurt anything. Whats the purpose of the resonator? Just to quiet down the exhaust right?

As far as I know, it's purely sound. No resonator may improve exhaust flow, but I couldn't say for sure.
