Most will say if you are financially able to, stay away from the 2004-2005 RX-8s as they had more problems than the 2006+ ones.

Maintenance will be a bit more than most cars (well, you have to check the oil more often as it burns a small bit of oil during the combustion cycle).

Overall, its like a lot of cars, if you take care of it then it will last you a long time.

Do your research, know what you're getting into. I purchased my 8 new in 2007 and knew going into it that the fuel mileage wasn't great, that oil levels had to be checked frequently, and my dealer thorougly explained the start up and shut down procedure to me. I also knew that the engine would freely take 9K RPM and provide smile after smile when people drove by checking my car out. I live in Ohio so the car goes into storage on November 1 and comes out April 1 (weather permitting) and let me tell you it is like taking delivery of my car all over again every spring....do I regret my decision....never. Do I still love my car three years later? Absolutely~ Zoom-Zoom ~

shinka chick you hit the nail right on the head. all cars have there querks but the minor rx8 querks are outweighed by the great ownership feeling of the 8

i have an 05 and i have not had one single problem with it. you must keep up on oil and coolant changes as well as other routine maitenance such as trans oil (at 30k), spark plugs (30K) diff oil (30K) etc. you must have a fair amount of mechanical knowledge or have the will to learn and you must have patience with the 8. overall after owning the 8, i must say that i'm thoroughly pleased with the car and i drive it most days over my Corvette.

I researched off and on about 2 years before I decided to purchase and spent 4 months looking for the exact one I wanted. 2 years and 6 months later, I still get a smile on my face every time I get in it. I still turn around to look at it as I am walking away. I still feel the thrill on a regular basis. And never once have I felt regret that I bought it.

And all of this is still true, even though I believe that I will find out I need a new engine on Tuesday. (Cat failed in December, and I think the seals got over stressed, leading to a dropping compression)

And it isn't the 'omg what am I going to do?' That I had when my corolla's engine failed.

Research research research. Know what you are getting into. This is a unique niche car that generates strong emotion, love and hate. It isn't for everyone. Don't wait to find out that it isn't for you until after you buy it. Know that it is the right car for you before purchase.

My 2005 was delivered in 2006 Its 4 years this week I've owned it. 53000 miles. Only problem was a tiny oil leak that was repaired at 6000 miles, and a battery at 51000 miles. Mostly highway driven.

There were some issues with early model engines but thats been pretty much cleared up. They seem to hold up pretty well to 150,000 miles according to several posters here.

Minor annoyances like squeaks and rattles. Chassis is rock solid.

What problems?

Aside from the dreaded sun visor collapse issue, I have had no problems.

Also:

No valves to adjust
No head gaskets to leak
No timing belt to replace or keep you awake at night.

Were it not for the gas mileage, this would be cheaper to keep than a Hyundai.

If you do buy one used a for a compression check first. Post the numbers here. I didn't but I lucked out and only had to do all the 30K maintenence right when I bought the car. Since then 0 problems

The car will spontaneously combust and go supernova when you hit 88mph.

Seriously though, there's a million threads on this, scroll all the way down, see the "Similar threads" section and pick any one of those.

Lol thanks

Just wondering how much would it cost for a new engine? Also the thing is that I like smooth engines so the rx8 might be a good car. Plus steering feel is important. I tried searching for RX-8 reliability on this website but the results were a litle iffy. On the net I get some really mixed stuff...one person saying that if you take care it is fine...and others claiming the car pretty much ruined their lives. Anywho I am gonna test drive one soon (God willing) and see what' sup Take care....

If you don't keep up with the routine maintenance (checking oil every other fillup or twice a month and fill as needed and letting the car warm up before driving it) then you could run into problems.

Oh, and make sure you have the finances before you test drive.. Once you do, you will want it and it would be a major disappointment if you couldn't afford one. Best of luck to you!
