recalls not under warrenty?
Ok so i take my car into the dealership to get the new flash update they came out w/ and the moon roof rattle fix, also the oil dipstick milky substance fix, and the delaer called me earlier telling me they are going to have to call my extended warrenty to see if they will cover it b/c my car has 56k miles and the factory warrenty wont pay for it.. so i tell the guy but its a mazda recall so why should i have to pay and i get that bs line of it has to be under warrenty for mazda to fix it.. this cant be right can it guys?? Its like a recall they are mazdas fix's i dont get it. what should i do if they want me to pay 90 bux for diagnosis *bs* 90 dollars for flash, 90 for moon roof but they are aware of the oil problem and will cover that....i think this guy has no idea what he's talking about...and they just rebuilt my tranny last summer and its going out again so im sure they are going to try to put that on me too

Does this say that im screwed or it doesnt matter if you have vehicle warrenty or not?? lol
DESCRIPTION
Some 2004-2008 RX-8 vehicles may experience a lack of engine power and/or low/rough engine idle speed in
high ambient temperatures. A revised PCM calibration is available which increases metering oil lubrication
amount during engine start and changes ignition timing control during high ambient air temperature conditions.
NOTE:
• UNDER THE MAZDA SPECIAL PROGRAM (MSP16), ALL CURRENT DEALER INVENTORY AND
RETAILED VEHICLES FOUND TO BE WITHIN THE ABOVE VIN RANGE, AND PRODUCED
BETWEEN APR. 10, 2003 THROUGH NOV. 9, 2007, MUST BE INSPECTED AND REPAIRED
ACCORDING TO THE INSTRUCTIONS CONTAINED IN THIS SERVICE BULLETIN.
• BEFORE PERFORMING ANY REPAIR, VALIDATE THAT THE VEHICLE IS APPLICABLE TO
THIS PROGRAM BY PERFORMING AN “eMDCS WARRANTY VEHICLE INQUIRY” AND VERIFYING
THE VEHICLE DISPLAYS CAMPAIGN “MSP16” AND ITS CAMPAIGN STATUS DISPLAYS
“OPEN”. SEE “VEHICLE INSPECTION PROCEDURE” BELOW.

I think the new flash is considered a recall. If it is then it would be covered out of warranty.
The sunroof rattle however, is a TSB (technical service bulletin) and those are only covered under warranty. I'd suggest just greasing the tracks of your sunroof, that's all the dealer did for me (under warranty) and I haven't heard it since.
And your tranny would be covered under the powertrain warranty unless you're over the time limit on that one (5 years/60k miles IIRC)

no, tsb's are NOT recalls. totally different. tsb's are NOT covered outside of warranty, even if you have the extended powertrain warranty. i just went through this, even called mnao myself. tsb's are voluntary, and only apply IF they customer complains of the symptoms. even IF/WHEN the customer complains, they still will charge for the diagnostics to prevent every joe schmoe from coming in and saying, "oh, uh, i have that one problem with that one tsb and i want my car checked out for free." now, if you get the diagnostics and the dealer can VERIFY your complaint (ie of the power loss), then they should not charge you for it because the complaint is legit, but otherwise you will have to pay -- again, tsb's are considered maintanence, they are not recalls.

The new flash is a MSP not a TSB. Manufacturer's Special Program should be covered free. True RECALLs are safety related and mandated by the Feds. The MSP is not a recall but it isn't a TSB that is merely a notice of how to fix a problem either within (free) or out of warranty (pay).

Im kinda ready to take my car in, I need to do inspection on my car soon and it will fail inspection if I do not reflash it b4 I take it in.

really?? I'm not so sure about that because I was the one that needed to bring it up...they are obligated to do it if you mention it...thats what i was under the impression of
also, anyone who has gotten the MSP16 done...what were the results?
I'm friends with the techs and they said that the only responses they received were negative
Is this because the flash is not beneficial or because the only feedback they received were from unhappy customers?

Yes, I did read your entire post. I was not referring to the sunroof rattle - sorry I didn't clarify. I was only replying to the TSB for the power loss - you stated something to the effect of "if it is considered a recall, it is covered under warranty" - I was just pointing out that is NOT considered a recall, and therefore not necessarily covered if you're out of warranty.
If you are under warranty, tsb, msp, recall, it doesn't matter, it's all free.
If you are NOT under warranty (and the extended powertrain warranty does not count, even though the "power loss" tsb is engine related, tsb's (or msp's, whatever) are not necessarily free. i just went through 2 weeks of dealing with n/a directly on this, even spoke to a manager to verity. it is NOT always free because they consider all the steps involved in the tsb/msp "maintanence", except the reflash itself. just the reflash itself, sure - that would be free ... but the entire tsb including all testing, de-carb, new sparks, etc.) is NOT free, nor required. even IF you complain of power loss, they may charge you, i promise. like i said earlier, if they do the testing and VERIFY your complaint of power loss, THEN, and only then, it is free (the cleaning and testing, etc.). it's their way of preventing everyone who is out of warranty coming in and claiming they have power loss just to get a free de-carb, etc. and again, the reflash itself is probably free, but the full tsb won't be, if you're out of warranty. I got into a very heated discussion with na about this (mostly because my initial complaint of power loss WAS when i had the full warranty, and now the second incidence was when i was not under warranty, so i felt i should have been "grandfathered" in since the tsb wasn't even available when i had my first documented complaint!). anyway, maybe some of you are "in" with your dealer and they'll do it for free, i don't know, but by the book, tsb/msp outside of warranty are categorized as maintanence - they may reimburse you the fee (read: not charge you to begin with) once they verify you complaint is legit.
that's how i got my new engine just this week - they said I MIGHT have to pay $250 (for the testing, de-carb, etc.). the test results results came back poor, so na replaced my engine, and the originally quoted $250 for the tsb was waived.
that seemed confusing! and is a lot more than i intended to write. let me know if you have any questions, i just dealt with all this so i can give people names, numbers, invoice, etc. if you're hearing something else for your dealer.

2tone, good clarification. The reflash is the MSP and should be free, everything else the decarbon etc. is TSB and payment depends upon warranty status. Glad that it worked out for you with the replacement.

I'm sure you're right zoom -- I'm just trying to point out the difference between the full tsb (msp) and the reflash. the reflash should be free, and you're right, they should do it even if you just bring in the 8 for an oil change. but if you bring it in, out of warranty, and want the full testing, de-carb, etc., that is not free.

thanks again - i'm pumped about it, really noticed an immediate difference with the re-man. i didn't realize that even though the power loss only happened twice, the overall pull was low, so it really feels good now in the lower rpms. i got it back monday and left town tuesday, all i can think about is driving when i get home!!
