I just talked to one of my buddies and he said that rx8's rotary engines start to die out at 50K+ miles, has anyone had experience with this problem? My buddy had an rx8 with 40k+ miles and his is running good so far, but he told me not to get an rx8 with 55k miles...kinda confused

Wow, after reading that site, I'm a bit concerned. So far so good with my 8 though, been driving it pretty much every day. I've filled it up once so far (used Esso 91 Octane Premium, maybe I'll use Shell 93 octane V power next time) and I'll definitely use 5W30 oil as well

As long as you keep on top of maintenance, like with any engine, and make sure to redline every so often to keep the carbon buildup down, you'll be fine.


There are lots of people with high mileage engines and they're fine.

 

Very true, I've been redlining it daily now (feels good doing it too )

And for every 10 positives, you will get your 1 negative, and of course, you only hear about the negatives.

 

I just want to add something that popped into my head just now:

I'm actually thinking that casual drivers probably don't know about redlining every so often. If it's true about carbon buildup, that could be a leading cause of the so called engine breakdowns that site is talking about.

Just throwing that out there... if I hadn't found this site, I would never have known to redline the engine to clear carbon buildup.

 

An average person wouldn't know to do it correct, but also people generally never do proper maintenance on their cars and they get all pissed off when the car breaks down.


It's like people who drive on bald and/or under inflated tires and then wonder why they explode on the highway.

OKay, not to be rude, but your buddy is an idiot. I've got a 2004, and I am about to hit 100k- I've done nothing special aside from routine maintenance. And I'm not even close to having one of the highest mileage 8s around. There are several "whos got 100k+ miles" threads if you look.

Your "friend" cites several sources, and doesn't back up a single one. What RX-8 sites? Where are the links, or the research? Hearsay and made up faces don't mean jack. And your friend ought to be ashamed for even writing something like that.

 

yeah they die exactly at 50k miles so better time it right to roll into the mazda dealership right when you roll at 50k or you'll be stranded....

 

Got 30K on my 04 running 5w20 w/ no problems so far!

 

Oh and btw the engine is covered for 8years/100k miles

A number of contributors to that thread have post counts of 1. I wonder if that means anything. It would here, but I don't know the culture at that forum.

I'm confused about explanations for the failures, in that thread and in other threads here.

If the problem is not enough oil being injected, why is carbon considered to be the issue? It would seem that carbon would signify too much oil. Not enough ought to bring about seal wear and scuffing of the epitrochoid. Same confusion over the oil being too thin.

now has 68k

no problems! running 5w30 synthetic extended performance

burns a bit more oil than i anticipated

i redline it a couple times a day

only thing after a 5 hour drive back from pensacola

i got off the interstate after running it continuously at about 4000 revs in sixth on the interstate back

i tried to redline in first gear and it bogged down and wouldnt go above 6 thousand revs so i shifted and kept the revs low tried it again a few miles down the road and it goes fine

and no problems with it bogging down since!

You never planed, are, or will get a RX-8, just keep your FWD sports compact, put a muffler on it, and call it a day.

If you were serious about getting a RX-8, this website, instead of aumotive.com, would've been your first resource for information.

Please don't make up this imaginary RX-8 owner also known as your friend, come on, I was born one day, just not yesterday.

 

I'm scared.. I'm almost at 50K miles and i have a 04. I'm gonna spend some time some weekend and make sure everything is right and go to Mazda and have them hook up the computer to the 8 and have them check if everything is tip top..

edit- im running on 5/20... going to change oil sometime this month and im going with the 5/30...

 

^ gimme a break honestly if you get "scared" over your car or you worry excessively about it not lasting a long time then why did you buy an rx8? To me the 8 is a car you literally love, do all the regular maintenance needed, and then don't worry about it! Let driving it right do the work.
Sure you can be attentive to something that's acting up, etc..but only in moderation. To me the 8s just one of those cars..you never know if you'll start having problems tomorrow so why worry.

Lifes too short..just enjoy the car. The engine might give you 20k miles or it might give you 200k. Who really knows. If you wanted presumed reliability you should have bought a car considered "reliable" like a honda civic or something. lol /endrant!

 

to hell with civics!!! i love the 8.. I'm just starting to have some little problems with it and i don't even know what the previous owner did with, but all i know is that they trashed it.. and i did not know that different oil could change the life of the rotary by a drastic amount. Truth be told i did not do my research before i bought the 8. but besides the small leak i have and sometimes a long start the car runs great, i try to keep it in tip- top shape.

man over 80k easy on mine no problem whatsoever juss stay on top of maintainence and you'll be fine. i come from owning 6 previous performance cars and this one isn't any different you just need to stay on top of things

I doubt they even read 1 page of the manual, where it states that it actually burns oil. Also, they just complain and complain, without doing any research or getting anything done properly.
