random door lock and panic button action?

random door lock and panic button action?
when i approach my 2004 RX-8 with a key in my pocket or loosely in hand the door locks (and occasionally the Panic) go on and off randomly without pressing any buttons. Once the key is in the ignition, this randomness stops. I've replace the batteries in both remotes, but this doesn't help.
Anyone seen this before, or have any ideas?
