I'm pretty sure it would be extremely difficult to do so not to mention you are threatening your structural integrity. Can't say i have ever seen someone do it, for good reason.

You can live without a sunroof. Trade in your R3 for a Grand Touring...

I sat in one today at the Mazda dealership and felt the comfy cloth-interior. The moon roof put the dome light back though.

my ideal 8 would be the R3 with add'l oem stuff like moonroof, leather rotary accent seats, navi, and with the s1 two-toned steering wheel...
