Question Quick redline question or three

Ok, so I've read numerous times here that it is good for the engine to rev it to redline from time to time. Flaunting my ignorance, can I get just a little clarification here?

1) Which, technically, is the redline, the 8500 where the beeper goes off, or the 9000 where the tach shows solid red?

2) To achieve the theraputic value, is it good enough to hit the redline and then back off, or do you need to maintain it at redline for a period of time? And if so, for how long?

3) Does it really have to be all the way to redline? If I get it up to, say, 8000, is that good enough to get the good effect? (Sometimes traffic requires me to back off the acceleration before I quite get all the way there)

Thanks!

1. beep at 8500, redline at 9000, fuel cut at 9500 (?)
2. hit it for a milisecond
3. I don't believe you have to get to the actual beep (or beyond 8k) to serve the purpose.

Correct me if I'm wrong...

I personally have a place where I do a 3rd gear pull and then let it slow down with a little help from the brakes. I've read somewhere on here I belive that it helps blow out anything that's accumulated, I could be wrong.

1) Yes, Yes, fuel cutoff is somewhere between 9400-9500
2) Just tap it, don't hold it, works best when accelerating hard and you shift.
3) Yes, as long as you get it over 6750 to get all the ports open should be good enough

rotarygod may disagree, but I typically beep it at least twice a week, usually in 3rd, which until yesterday did not realize how fast I was going when I did this , guess I'll go back to 2nd

The beep is timed properly so that when you shift as you hear it, the rpm would have be hitting very close to the 9000 redline. I guess loading the engine is best at getting rid of the carbon, I held the engine at 7500 rpm when going up hill for like 30 seconds.

yes, beep it every so often so you won't build up carbon. Just make sure you warm up your engine before you do so...

Yeap, warm up as in totally warm up both oil and coolant.

I've had mine for 3 and a half weeks, 1100 miles. Is it safe to do it once a day or should i wait until the miles add up?

Its fine to redline your engine once a day, I wouldnt suggest doing it multiple times everyday or for prolonged periods of time.

oh, hell drive it like you stole it. Everywhere I see that N/A rotaries are bulletproof. This past sunday I took a backroad and kept it in 3rd for at least 5 minutes above 8k the whole time. And from what it feels like driving it now, it loved it.

I have also read where people have gone took their car to the track and it ran extremely well on the street the couple weeks afterwards, so it sounds like you will be rewarded for driving it hard.

There is nothing wrong with driving it hard. Maintain the engine correctly (fluid changes) and I don't believe anyone can hurt it in stock form.

The whole idea is to get the rotor spinning fast enough so the seals clean all the carbon build-up out of the combustion chamber.

You don't have to get it to redline, but the faster the rpms the better the cleaning action.

But the biggest therapeutic value is for the driver:

Bad day at work? <ZOOOOM! "Beep!">
Wife or girlfriend pissed off? <ZOOOOM! "Beep!">
Neighbor's dog get into your garbage again? <ZOOOOM! "Beep!">

etc ...

I redline mine 4-5 times a day, just because it sounds so good doing so.

Beep for fun.
Take your favorite twisty road with the tach on the far side of 6000 RPM with lots of throttle and lots of shifting! The '8 feels like a race car! If you aren't smiling by the end of the run then you must be dead.
