Questions on 6 speed manual?

The last time I drove manual was back in the 70'. A VW with 4 speed H type shifting. Only 4 gears to play, easy. Now with
the 6 speed, I find it a little intimidating shifting thru all the
gear to get thru the highway to cruise. This may be a stupid
question, but, can I go 1st to 4rth, then shift to 6th? In the
same token, can I shift from 6th to 4rth or 3rth? , bypassing
some gears in the middle? I realized that we have to be at
the right rpm, or else there is going to be this "jerking" motion and over reving. I've read some folks had been cruising on
4rth, thinking they're in 6th? Can this guy shift from 4rth
to 6th??? and be done with it.

You can. A lot of people skip 5th gear completely.

I do skip gears sometimes, but I usually shift through them all.

When you need speed, it isn't uncommon to go from 6th down to 4th. It will be easy once you get used to knowing how fast you can go in each gear.

Hey Blue Flash. You are missing 700rpm in each gear. The rev limiter kicks in at 9300. I do the same thing except it is on the track where there are no popos ecxept for ones doing the same as me.

I am traditional and shift one by one... I hate to miss a gear and lost momentum

I also drive traditional style, shifting through each gear when upshifting. I'll skip gears when downshiting from time to time.

I only skip gears if I am going from accelerating to cruising or if I am downshifting sometimes. I wouldn't be too woried about it if I was you.

My general approach is to 1-2-3-6. Hammer it throught the first three gears -- which have a very fluid feel -- and go directly to 6th for cruising.

Many times I go 1st to 3rd to 5th, especiallty if I am in city traffic and drinking coffee. If you rev it to around 4000 RPM, then skip a gear, it does not lug at all. Of corrse, you are traveling pretty conservatively.

That's the amazing thing about the 8, you have so much variation in the gearing, depending on the RPM's you run.

1-2-6 much of the time (usually onramps). I make 65 in 2nd, then cruise in 6th. Sometimes 1-2-4-6.
