The easiest thing I know of is to get an AccessPort. But they ain't cheap, and it's not a big gain. But I think it can help with other mods and it has other uses, so it might be a good place to start. I'm not a modder but this is one I'm considering.

hey untouchable, welcome to our little corner of the internet.

As for power adder for the 8, conventional wisdom does not apply. This car is desinged very well and Mazda didn't leave much on the table for us to tinker with.
Where some standard piston cars make very noticable gains with simple addons such as intakes / ehaust, ours do not react the same. You MIGHT get a few horsepower 2-10 hp from it but it's nothing like other cars where freeing up exhaust flow yields grand results.

Are there other benefits to adding intakes / exhausts? I believe so. The more cold air you can get into the engine, the better it will be.
As for the exhaust? The sound alone makes it worth it. (IMO)

Removing the Catalytic (though illegal) can help squeak out some more horsepower. Maybe another 5-10. You can put a midpipe on or you can go with a High Flow Cat.

The AccessPORT is a great option as well. Getting it tuned can lean out the AFR's a bit and get you a few extra horses. Read up on the AP though, the hp benefits are just ONE of many reasons to get the AP.

Nitrous is always another option. Probably the best 'bang for the buck' if you want an extra 50 or so hp.
Hope all of this helps

Crap thats what I was going to type... but since Jedi is being so helpful I will chip in with my 2c also.

To the OP: You may be wanting a bit more power right now, but the car is set up very well from the factory. The best thing you can do is get an AccessPORT and maybe the Axial flow short shifter. If you really learn to take advantage of the car, especially taking the revs all the way through the power band you will find it has a good amount of power stock.

If you decide to go for a lot more power, the Major Horsepower Upgrades section is an amazing resource. Slapping on a turbo or supercharger is not a minor task with this car, but the gains can be huge. Learn everything you can from the people on this forum who really know their stuff. Best of luck!

Ya if you really go and take the stock 8 to it's limits, you might find that it's already got incredible performance. Modifying the motor for more power/torque, although not necessarily bad for it, will probably decrease the life of your motor anyway. Leaving the motor stock is nothing to be ashamed of; the renesis is an absolute gem and will be considered a classic for decades. It's not like you have a run of the mill basic 4 banger, you have a unique piece of machinery which deserves respect. And also, most aftermarket mods for the 8 don't really add any power anyway; they just cost you a **** ton of cash and make your car more visible to cops/old people who like to complain. The stock motor with stock intake and exhaust already sounds incredible.

Pretty much what everybody else says. Your best bet for any serious gains are going to be either a super/turbo or Nitrous. You could do little things to your car to make it more unique to yourself, but in the end, it's what you want to do.

Get a Cobb anyway, though.

Super disturbing QotD if you ask me..

I read through this thread, and based on the replies, it seems changing the flywheel doesn't seem worth it? I really want to do so on mine (and get the AP as well), but is the installation really that expensive?

The only reason to replace the flywheel is if you are already replacing the clutch. The installation is quite expensive and the benefit is minimal. If/when I need to replace my clutch I'll probably replace the flywheel just because it will be right there, but its not something you should rush out and do.

^^^ +1.
It's expensive to replace because it's a bit labor intensive. I hear an upgraded flywheel is a fun mod, makes you fly through the gears faster but for me (IMO), I'll just wait until I replace the clutch and kill two birds with one stone.
