Question about redlining . . .

This may have been asked elsewhere and may be a dumb question, but . . .

This morning I was driving to work, and went into the redline area while cruising around someone. Is it bad to go into the redline area, or is it ok as long as you don't drive for a long time in it?

Thanks!

P.S. I'm new to the whole six-speed manual -- only had the RX-8 for a week.

rx8s are redline happy engines and need to be redlined but dont keep it there too long

dozer 10-06-2009 09:49 AM

you can keep it there, but not for a long time, you can bounce on it all you want....when i redline i usually shift closer to 9.5k with no problem

Redlining the car is good. Staying in the redline for an extended period of time wouldn't be so good for your transmission, but it's no big deal for your engine.

You want to redline the car at least once a day, and you can hold it for several seconds too. It helps your car breathe.

I like to just drive around in first gear at 9k RPM...it really lets my engine breathe...give it a go some time

I am my neighborhood's alarm clock....in all seriousness, it has been said a billion times before...a red-line a day keeps the carbon away*...

*Disclaimer: My previous post was a joke that may not be obvious, having re-read it. Please do not subject your car to gratuitous and constant redlining as your trans will likely end up screaming "F YOUUUU!" as it drops out of the bottom of your car. Also, please keep your safety and the safety of those around you, as well as the local speed ordinances, fresh in your mind when you are administering your daily dose of red-line...carbon doesn't matter if you can't drive your car.

Redline is ok for this engine, it does not suffer the same problem as the piston cousins.

yep its fine. infact i redline at 10. you get the most power between 9.5k to 10. it kicks in like Taboo

As long as ITS OVER 9000!!!!! you're doing good.

813KR$ 10-06-2009 11:51 AM

when you get up in the rpms too high the water pump cavitates and doesnt allow proper flow of coolant. As long as it is not held for extended periods of time, your good! As everyone above has mentioned . . .

Thanks everyone for the quick responses. Mine beeped at me when I redlined this morning, made me nervous -- maybe I'll try it again on the way home :)

adamwzl 10-06-2009 12:33 PM

That will be the redline indicator, young padawan.

Pretty sure the engine peaks at 8.5...

It's supposed to.. I'd be more worried if it didn't.. the joy of the RX8 is hitting that beep and then taking a corner

adamwzl 10-06-2009 12:43 PM

my peak power is when it just hits 10k I feel something going on, that means more power right?

Gr8Bullet 10-06-2009 12:47 PM

red lining FTW!!!! with catless pipes!:yesnod:

Bigbacon 10-06-2009 01:02 PM

suppose to make it beep... thats telling you that you just did your good deed for the day.

stepatee 10-06-2009 01:45 PM

OK -- I took it out at lunch, let it beep at me once or twice. Just feels so unnatural . . . just takes time I guess :)

The Reverend 10-06-2009 01:47 PM

After a while the beeping will make you feel happy in the pants

I always understood that since the peak is at 8.5, if you shift at 9500 or higher it will land you back in that peak range, thus giving you a bit more push when you shift. Does anyone know if this is right, or is it optimal to shift at 8500-8700?

HockeyRX-8 10-06-2009 02:09 PM

redlining will blow your motor to pieces....DONT DO IT!!!!!!

.....j/k :)

stepatee 10-06-2009 03:08 PM

HockeyRX-8 -- you almost had me convinced that everyone else was lying to me! I'm still that nervous about shifting in the "red zone"!

dozer 10-06-2009 03:11 PM

trust us, redline is ok, this isnt a piston engine, you arent gonna mess anything up
