So I had a code P0456 at Autozone, and my first step was to replace the gas cap. So should it turn off after so many drive cycles if that was the problem? or should I disc. the battery to reset the CEL and see if it comes back on?

 

gaz cap is one thing but it could also be a leak anywhere in the Hvap system, and I dont think unplugging the battery will clear the code.

 

It generally takes four vehicle on/off cycles to reset the loose gas cap code. Or you could have had Autozone clear it for you.

Be sure to click the cap a half dozen times or so in the future.

 

yup wait a while then have it reset it should go away in a few cycles though

 

Yea i've tried the "brake pump" and the "tripometer reset" method, the only way I've seen the CEL go away is by disc. the battery for 15 min. but I'll wait for it to cycle. Just don't wanna pay $80 for a "smoke-test" friggin rediculous!

So since I've replaced the gas cap ($5 w/shipping online...WOOT) and reset CEL via battery, no CEL 3 days and 80 miles later. I'm hoping that was the issue, especially since I'm due for an insp. sticker in a month
