Prospective Buyer Reliability questions

Hey guys,
I'm looking at buying either an 04 or an 05 Rx-8. Ive been reading and doing research on this car and noticed that people are having to replace their engines at something insane like every 30,000 miles or so. People have retaliated towards these posts by basically saying you aren't maintaining it properly and changing the oil as much as they should, because they are not used to a rotary engine. And please correct me if I'm wrong but these oil changes should come around every 3,000 miles or so, with non synthetic oil. Has anyone had problems with there engine burning up and still after taking care of it as people say "how they should?" And does the changing from 5w-20 to 5w-30 really help the engine not burn up?

Hmmm.

I see you've been reading. You should read more. This general section has the answers to all of your questions. Some of them have been heavily debated, so they'll be easy to find based on the number of pages in each thread. because of this, those questions can't be answered so concretely. As for the 30k miles thing, it's a complete exaggeration.

Definitely read the thread Jason pointed you to. It escapes me why that thread is not in the FAQ section.

Keep in mind that if you buy an '04 or '05 you're buying a 6 or 7 year old sports car. Not that there's anything wrong with that, but reliability and risk are going to be different from buying a new Honda.
