Potential?

What kind of performance does the 8 have the potential for? Meaning with the right kits, can it hang with the big boys in speed and power?

You put enough time and money into anything and you can have a car that would crush just about anything...

How are you "Texas/North Carolina"? You cannot be in two places at once...that would rip a whole in our 3rd dimension...or something....

Back on subject:
It's all relative.
Relative to what you consider big hp.
Relative to how much money you have.
Relative to how much time and patience you have.

Mainly, what I'm trying to get at is....SEARCH.

with money you can do anything you want, like a fully built and turboed 20B that can run 11 second passes with ease.

But on a budget, straight line isn't going to be 10 seconds or modded Evo/STI territory. You can focus on suspension and handling and get the 8 to be a more capable machine in the twisties than a lot of hardware out there.

I've always wondered that too!
Sure the Rotary has small displacement, but it is an efficient engine when it comes to number of moving parts. It is a young technology comparing it to piston engines. Who knows, maybe Mazda will be able to figure out how to improve fuel efficiency while increasing HP numbers. I think this line of engine has a lot of potential from the engineers at Mazda.

For example, and correct me if I'm wrong, but how long has Chevy had the corvette's engine in R&D? It is an awesome engine just because they've been doing their R&D on it.

I'm not all to familar with all this so I may be blowing hot air.

$$$$ = power. Hp or politically - it's always worked that way.

^^^Screw that! It's your car...do whatever you want to do with it! If you have the money then make it a straight line car! If you don't have the money enjoy it for what it is but it's nobody's place to tell you what to spend your money on! I'd like more power in my 8 but that doesn't mean I want to get another car. There are plenty of cars out there that are not straight line cars that have more power but they don't go through this crappy answer every time someone mentions adding power.

I think the real answer to the question is nobody is 100% sure of what the Renesis' potential really is outside of maybe Mazda! That's just what I think though!

Sure it can...just better hope you don't have any other financial obligations at the moment. cause it's gonna cost you a fortune. The NA rotary naturally costs a lot more money to squeeze good power out of than an NA piston engine.

If power is truely your goal, it'll be acheived MUCH quicker and much cheaper with a piston engine. However, if rotarys really are your thing, the 7 would be a better place to get your start...more potential from the get go when it comes to power.

$ is the problem. it really expensive to get this car in to a big straight line performer. if you instead were a track guy then the money could much better spent on suspension stuff

Agreed! I should have read the original posters question better...the answer to his question depending on which cars he defines as the big boys is more than likely yes! There is one kit that I believe gives strong enough numbers...but that is not saying that it matches the big boys dollar for dollar on the gains!

Sorry, but 325 or even 350 whp just isn't going to cut it. There are cars that can get there with basic boltons and will be quite reliable.

Ike, you are one of my favorite people here but you didn't read what I said carefully. A 325whp RX-8 is pretty damn strong considering what the numbers look like stock but I did say that it was not going to match the big boys dollar for dollar as far as mods. It should do okay against some of the lightly modded "big boys". I didn't see the original poster mentioned equally modded... just against the "big boys". I mean come on a 3000lb car with 325 whp should by no means be a slouch!

modding potential on a hp per dollar basis is very bad for this car. if you got enough money you can make any car fast as hell. if you want to make a car fast on the cheap, you need to either get a small block OHV V8 or factory turbo/supercharged car
