Possibly dumb oil question

Ok guys,

Whenever I want to check the oil in my car, I usually start it and let it run while checking the level of oil. Now today I decided to check it when the car was off and the oil was right at the full mark, however when I started the car and began to check again, it was down one notch.

So what do I go by and also what is correct way to check the oil ? Sorry if this already been discussed.

What do you think the oil does while the engine is running as opposed to when it is not? If you apply a little common sense you can answer your own question. If your still stumped the owners manual has the answer.

^ That was the most polite response to a very common question I have seen. Kudos Expo for not giving him the finger or telling him to go take a hike!

Back on topic......Read the owners manual for how best to check the oil level, and/or do a quick search here on the forums. There are also stickies in the DIY section that will tell you everything there is to know about RX-8 oil.

Cheers

hey sometimes even smart ppl need a book ...hehe. BTW I do check the oil with the engine off on my wife's car, but dunno what made me think that a Rotary engine would require the engine to be running..I guess I figured while I am checking oil I might as well get the car warmed up..

Make sure you check the blinker fluid too.

Just kidding...hey, nobody was born knowing these things. I had to be taught when I got my first car.

damn its in the manual but let me say it again

Start the car, warm it up (or drive it like 10 mins it should be all warm up)

Stop it, let it sit for about 10 mins.

Now check ur oil
