Picked up a new RX8... one question???

Anyone notice a slight pinging... sorta like pre-ignition valve tapping?

I picked the car up last Friday... only really noticed it for the first time yesterday when I was driving with the windows up and AC off... so its not profuse by any stretch....

I've fueled it twice with name brand hi-test...

I wasnt sure if this was "normal...."

LOVE the car though!!!! Sweet ride!!!! heres a pic:

I have noticed it more often when using mid grade gas so I now always use premium name brand, like Shell.

Nice car, congrats and enjoy.

My car makes all kinds of weird noises, but I'm not sure if I've heard pinging.

Nice car! Just curious, where do you live in MD? (I'm in Gaithersburg.)

There is a kind of 'rattling' sound like marbles in a can far away. Must be normal as I've heard it for 10 months under light throttle.

that sounds like a natural burbling sound of the rotary engine under light load/idle

any backfires when letting off throttle quickly?

Nope... definately no backfires... just a light flutter under light acceleration...

yeah that's fine, as long as it sounds like butter when you take it to stratosphere :D

btw the cam timing thing was a joke, if you haven't figured that out already

Yeah... I was kinda reserving judgement on that one...

The car seems fine when winding it out....

Thanks for the replies!

Fuel grade and quality has been a major player in whether I experience detonation (pinging) under load.

Try experimenting with different octane and brand.

Chevron 92 has been good for me.
(but Chevron is notorious for not giving good economy)

Local brand 90 has NOT worked well.
(pinging and rattling under load - especially hills)

Will try Shell next...

Yeah... this not full ping mode for sure... just a light flutter... probably natural and I just never noticed it w/ac on etc...

My last fill was Shell Hi test (93?). I actually didnt think 90 or below was an option for this car?

I'l have to check the manual again! (dont ya love these newbies!)

Thanks for the input!

When I start the car and idle it with the clutch in it's wicked quiet. When you release the clutch and let it idle you hear a rattle (that goes away once it kicks down all the way) It's totally normal. Everyone seems to have heard something so that should put you at ease.
