Paint chipping on rear lights

Has anyone seen anything like this before? While washing my 8 today i noticed the paint was falling off around the edges of the tail light bezel. Its only on one side. I have never removed the light assembly, so it kinda ticks me off... The thought of having to burn into the original paint so soon just kills me. I dont know about the rest of you but the paint on the RX8 seems to chip easier than any other car Ive ever had... either that, or its the first time I really cared so much about a car that I notice ever paint chip.... so far about 10 =(

havyn 01-11-2004 06:40 PM

wow man that really sucks...

the paint on my s2k seems to be really thin as well...had a small rock hit the hood yesterday and it chipped down to the metal.

flyboyindy 01-11-2004 06:42 PM

If it were just the one chip on the bottom I would probably just touched it up...but its along the whole edge....it really sucks =(

takahashi 01-11-2004 07:05 PM

sound like you are rubbing your car very hard....

But this should not happen... I will bring attention to the your local Mazda agent and they should fix this under warranty

flyboyindy 01-11-2004 07:43 PM

Even if I were "rubbing my car very hard" I can honestly tell you... I have never even touched that part of the car... Id have to rub it with a grinder to take paint off like that....

No offense dude... but if you are going to post, try posting something useful... No kidding it shouldnt happen to a 3 month old car...and gee... I never would have thought of taking it to the local Mazda dealer.... thought maybe I would pay for it myself!

Gyro 01-11-2004 07:51 PM

Yes.....I have seen a post on this same issue several months back.

I will try to find it. It was chipping in the same area.

flyboyindy 01-11-2004 07:52 PM

Thanks Gyro! I searched but didnt find anything

ranger4277 01-11-2004 07:55 PM

The old post on this (or at least one) didn't really say much.. it degenerated pretty bad. (the post, not the paint) :)

see it here

flyboyindy 01-11-2004 07:57 PM

Anyone had problems with paint matching the velocity red? Or any of the mica paints?

Gyro 01-11-2004 08:00 PM

HERES the old post.

problem is..........the pics that the member posted of the paint chipping are no longer on the server.

I remember the pics....it was excactly the same visually....maybe slightly lower near the center of the bottom edge.

Gyro 01-11-2004 08:01 PM

sorry Ranger I didn't see your link to the post.....oops:)

flyboyindy 01-11-2004 08:05 PM

For some reason, I cant see any of the pics in that post... Oh well.. at least I am not the only one it happened to... I will go to the dealer tomorrow and see what they have to say

WHealy 01-11-2004 08:49 PM

Good luck flyboyindy. Hopefully all will go well.

flyboyindy 01-11-2004 08:51 PM

Thanks Bill! If only I had some of that BLUE paint! Blue paint will never come off of anything! =P

Not happy with mazda service

Ok, so I took the car in on Monday, they told me that the Service Manager will have to look at it, but he wasnt in. So I go in today (Friday) and the service manager was off again. But the service advisor said that all "warranty repaints" would be sent to a regional service manager. Ive read alot about getting warranty work done on Mazdas is like pulling teeth. Please tell me this isnt going to be the case. I love my car, but so far im not impressed with Mazda service. Hell, when I had my Pontiac, they ALWAYS replaced or fixed ANYTHING, no matter what, no questions asked.... What the hell? So I have to go in on monday to see what the guys says... Is it me, or am I the only one that thinks paint chipping off a car in this spot on a 5000 mile car is totally unacceptable???

I totally agree about the paint chipping off. That's rediculous. On the service department problems, how many dealers have you got that are reasonably close? Just because you bought the car at dealer "A", doesn't necessarily mean you have to go back to dealer "A". If the first dealer gives you the runaround, go to another one. The warranty stories you've heard about Mazda being difficult, are really hit and miss. I have been fortunate with the dealer I went to for service recently, although I would never dream of buying from them. After 15 years in a service industry, one thing I've learned along the way is: Bitch. Complain. Become the squeaky wheel. If they don't take care of it, go to the North American Mazda web site, file a complaint in the 'contact us' section, Or email mazdastate@mazdausa.com.

I would be very surprised to see Mazda refusing to fix your problem. Its obvious in the picture that its not wear and tear. There was no collision. It is a defect. Plain and simple.
If they deny it....then they will have to explain exactly what you did to cause it to chip.
I wouldn't worry about it.

Why they are giving you the run around is a mystery to me. It doesn't make any sense why the service manager needs to get involved in approving the warranty work. I suppose since there are so many variables to what may cause paint damage....and they don't trust the techs to make the call.

oosik 01-17-2004 09:43 AM

You know...I think I have the same thing on my left tail light....lemme git back to ya on mine!

oosik 01-17-2004 09:53 AM

yup. same thing, same spot on left side. Almost identical!!! I"ll talk to someone on Tuesday.

WHealy 01-17-2004 10:18 AM

flyboyindy (Frank),

We're with ya. This is an obvious warentee issue IMO. I assuem you are dealing with "Wood" as the "Hubler" shops are still under construction. If you need some stength in number, let me know and I'll see if I can help you strong arm em! Hopefully it won't come to that.
