Okay, wtf is this (free maintenence)...

Today I got a call from my Mazda dealer after I dropped the car off for an oil change, as prescribed by the manual at every 5000 miles. They did the work, gave me back the car... and told me that Mazda told them all the service is now at every 7500 miles, and that I'll have to pay for the work I had done (oil change).

Anybody know WTF IS GOING ON? I am not sure if they are giving me ****, or what... I just really want to know.

Let me know ASAP.

Usually it's state law that you have to be given a WRITTEN ESTIMATE for any work unless you sign to waive that and accept a verbal estimate. I don't believe that they can legally entice you to leave your car for what you legitmately believe to be 'free' work, then do the work without telling you that there's a cost involved, then demand that you pay before returning your car to you. The BBB and whatever State agency is responsible for business licencing would probably back this up. If they did the work, and Mazda isn't going to pay them, and you *DIDN'T* agree to pay for it in advance (did you sign anything?), then they have to eat it.

Call mazda directly. If you have to, do it while your at the dealer. Then hand them the phone and see what they say. I threatened that when I went through it last week. There was no more talk of paying after that.
