If it's ever coming on, in my experience, top it off/change it fully. If it's getting low, it could do the on/off deal. You never want a rotary to be low on oil...

This was a problem with '04s. The fix was to replace the oil pan. There's a TSB on this.

If there is a TSB on this, then call the Mazda dealership to make an appointment to have it fix.

Same thing happened to me. I also had this problem. Replace the oil pan and it's good to go. Same with the overflow tank if the coolant light comes on.

you should check it yourself regularly.
oil being new or old wont affect the level sensor since it ONLY reads oil level.
I found on the S2 version if oil is half to one quart low, the light will come on under hard braking.

Are you aware of the fact that the engine uses oil at about a full quart every 1000 miles, correct?

You need to check your oil level every couple hundred miles on this car.
It's not a Camry (thank God).

Same issue here. I just had my engine replaced in April. I changed my oil on May 2 and did not traveled nowhere the whole month except for work (10 miles). Now today May 27 my oil light keeps going on and off. I checked the dipstick and its already low. Not even a month and a new engine, it needs oil again? Tell me... is this normal? Do I have a bad seal or oil pan. Please advise!!!

Rotary engine burns oil faster than piston engines. That is normal and you just have to check your oil level once every two weeks or so. Some says, check it when you go get a fill-up. Anyway, just remember to check it once in a while.

WTF...............did you look and see any drips under the car or any evidence of oil in the engine bay?
We all know this car uses some amount of oil, but you didn't define low...so are we supposed to somehow tell telepathically how low it was and that you filled it correctly on May 2?
Do you have a smoky exhaust? If so what color and how does it smell?

Nope. No drips. No smoke. New engine and new oil line. When the oil light goes on and off, I checked the dipstick and it was on the last dotted line. It could be the sensor maybe or the oil pan, don't know what else. Yup on May 2, I still have the recipet. I took a trip to San Antonio this weekend and before I went ,I put in a half quart of oil and that did the job. No more lights. Still....it doesn't seem normal, but if that's the way RX-8s are, then ok. I'll keep an eye out on the oil.
