When I talked to Mazda, they said I could opt for either schedule in the owners manual. The first schedule is oil changes every 7500 miles, and the second schedule is oil change every 5000 miles. I told them that I would prefer the more often schedule because of my driving habits and mostly stop and go driving, and they said that would be fine.

i have a sticker on my windshield that says next maintenance 3,000 miles. so i plan on getting the oile change then and probably pay out of pocket then at 5,000 go again and i'll be on schedule for the free maintenance. i wouldnt wait until 5,000 if it's your first oil change. there could be metal shavings in the oil from break in.

If I didn't have free maintenance I would change oil and filter every 3333 miles. With free maintenance I change oil every 2500 miles and let the dealer change oil and filter at 5000 mile intervals.

I know that a lot of people always say that you should change at 3000. That was long ago and far away when oil was not as good. (In truth, it is the additives that are better, the oil is the same). Consumers Reports did a test on a cab fleet to test the difference. It was a long time ago, but if I remember correctly they had a fleet change at 3000 and a fleet at 7500 (what mfgs say). They then took apart all of the engines and found no difference in wear. The total miles driven were over 1 million.
I have changed mine at 7500 on one car. Currently I do 3000 since I have coupons with the dealer to do it at 3000.

I called the dealer today about what mileage should the first oil change occur. He said the RX8 is listed to have its oil changed at 3000 miles. I would change your car at that mileage. I don't think they will give you a problem under the free Maint. program. I just wish the dealer was open later or was closer to get them in. I still change my oil at 3000 miles because I have never had a engine problem in 38 years of driving. The average mileage that I could keep track of is over 175000 miles with no problems. A car is like a fine women a little extra attention goes a long way without problems.

I spoke to a Mazda rep today regarding our "free maint.", and to inform them I had not heard back from them after I sent my letter in. (Deadline is Oct.1 ) She looked me up in her computer, and said that all was ok, Mazda would soon sent us a letter w/ all the information. I asked her about the oil change interval. She said you can pick 5K, or 7,500. depending on your driving.
I will change my first one at 2,500. Courtesy of Gunther Mazda. Then I will opt for the 5K. I do not think this will be a problem. I change oil on my 993 every 5K, even though Porsche states every 15K (synthetic) is ok. Wishful thinking there!
