Oh No! Help please

Checking the oil the other day to top it off. Found a pasty substance (looked like liquid car wax) on the dipstick. Found the same on the inside of the oil fill cap. In a non-rotary engine I know that I would be looking at coolant in the oil and start trying to narrow it down to head gasket, cracked block etc. What would be different with the rotary engine? Am I looking at a cracked block as the only option? Don't know that it matters, but I have been keeping the car outside in the cold since I added a new car to the stable. I doubt that has anything to do with it but you never know. Changed the oil about 2000 miles ago (August) and did not notice anything. Haven't noticed anything at top offs until now. No noticeable performance defecits or problems on start up. Help!

Thanks,

James

Thanks for the quick response.
Should it trouble me that I'm finding it inside the oil fill cap also. Being plastic, I wouldn't think that it would get as cold as the dipstick tube. But it would explain why I have found no oil residue in the coolant (though I know that you can have one without the other if the problem just started).

Thanks again,

James

Apologies for quoting myself from an earlier thread...

"Condensation forms in cold temps when the engine / oil cools. Short-duration driving cycles does not allow the water to 'boil off' through the PCV system.

If you have an '04 or '05, the PCV hose routing was later changed to prevent this sticky goo from then depositing in the intake & MAF - now going to the lower intake manifold. For early year cars, get the hose routing changed (see TSB above) or get a catch-can.

Again, don't worry about it. Make every few drives a long drive to get rid of the condensation - and have some fun! "

(A link to the TSB is in Zoom's Winter Thread)

Thanks for the help. Makes me feel better.
Yes, it's in the RX8. The Corvette would be going right back to the dealership since it only has 2300 miles. I have to say, it scared the !@?** out of me. I sure don't need to have a high dollar engine repair right now. What brought you to Edmond, OK?

Thanks for all the help,

(PS. are the sun visors in the 2004's POS's, both my passenger and driver's side visors will no longer stay in the fully up position.)

James.

James.

Yep, they are Especially in the earlier cars (although even my '06 has had the driver's break). No problems with the replacement though; so they seem to have successfully reinforced the design/mfg flaw in the hinge.

There is a DIY around here somewhere to re/re and re-glue; or see your dealer.

PS: Please read the RX-8 F.A.Q. (at least the first two stickies)... A Lot of good info: https://www.rx8club.com/rx-8-faq-9/
