Motor magazine Australia May Edition:
"Ignore all the reviews of Mazda's new RX-8 that came from the world launch in San Fransisco in February - seems all the pre-production cars were down on power by 22kW. A computer glitch in the engine management system was supposedly to blame..."
Motor magazine is a very respected motoring magazine in Australia, so expect an even better reviews of the RX-8 when the production car is out.
22Kw is a lot, Best Motoring took the pre-production car for time attack at Laguna Seca and it is as fast as the NSX. Add an extra 22Kw to the car and you do the math.:D

Thats it, now I know for sure!!! With all the fantastic RX-8(-22kw) reviews so far, I will sell may 2002 WRX Sti. Getting bored with AWD, miss RWD sooo much. :p
I going to put an order for one tomorrow before the queue getting longer, especially if the real 250hp car ready for reviews.
It is going to be Winning blue, 6sp manual.

A quick search on Google only led me to this page:
http://www.ultimatecarpage.com/frame...ar.mv&num=1045
down it the bottom is this quote:
if this guy knows what he's talking about then the 22kw increase is for a future generation RX-8 and NOT the production models we'll be seeing next month
here's the entire post:

down it the bottom is this quote:
the top gun rx8 is under development and is at least a year away, but it will have a more advanced aero kit and enhanced suspension, better brakes, better exhaust system and sports seats. also the increase in power has been claimed by mazda to be 22kw more than the current version, which will bring the total output to 206kw/276hp @ a likely 10,000rpm.
here's the entire post:
ok the i've read a lot about this car in magazines and so far it looks great, the rear seats look great for any legless passengers you might have hehe. however this car was never about passengers, its all about the driving, and from what ive read and heard theres not a lot to fault it by. i hope this car isnt brought to shame by having multitudes of people putting big vielslide kits and huge chromes on it as just too many cars are ruined these days by such a method, vielslide kits r just plane hideous anyway, who would actually spend money on one, they completely ruin the image of every car they are fitted to. ive heard from reliable sources that for a top spec model they are unlikely to turbo the rx8. they are looking at alternative methods of increasing power, the head honcho's at the rx8's design team are looking at one of the following three options. A)give the engine an increase in capacity. B)add a third rotor. C)crank it an additional 1000rpm or so. so far it looks like the design team is leaning towards option C, some modifications to the engines porting might be required, also the internals would need some toughening, and there we have our top gun rx8 model. yes i have also heard about the new rx7 and apparently its engine will have an increase in capacity over the 1.3l, which is part of the reason their not that keen on increasing the capacity for the top gun rx8 model, because the large rotor is, reserved, if you will, for the next rx7. the top gun rx8 is under development and is at least a year away, but it will have a more advanced aero kit and enhanced suspension, better brakes, better exhaust system and sports seats. also the increase in power has been claimed by mazda to be 22kw more than the current version, which will bring the total output to 206kw/276hp @ a likely 10,000rpm. wicked

Yup, that too, RX-8 MPS will has another 22kw to bring the power up to 206kw.
But the current RX-8s also has this problem with the computer that bring the power down by 22kw. So the Laguna Seca RX-8s are not 185 kw but 163kw which is reasonable for 5.9sec0-60mph or 6.5 sec 0-100kmh. RX-8 is a 6sec or lower 0-100kmh car(mid 5 sec 0-60 mph). Motor magazine is not the only magazine that stated this problem. They also dare to say "Ignore all the reviews of Mazda's new RX-8 that came from the world launch in SF" I am sure they know what they are talking about.

What is the RX-8 "MPS"?
so what you're saying is that the current specs Mazda has posted up fo 250hp is incorrect and should actually be 276hp when production comes out? or are you saying that in the future, we'll be able to get some type of upgrade to the computer chip that allows the extra 22kw?

No, it means that not all the power that was supposed to be there was really there. Supposedly on of the intake ports did not open and so there was a loss of power at high rpms. It is kinda like testing a Honda, but with VTEC not activating.

i was under the impression that the car SCC had tested was a 250hp model but had those intake valves shut so it really only performed like the 210 model...i guess i'm just confused right now as to whether the car will actually have MORE than 250hp

The one that SCC tested was (is) a 250 hp model with the third port that didn't open at 6250rpm.
MPS is the MazdaSpeed version coming out. The quote says it will have 22kw more power than the current version. What is the conversion for kw to hp anyway?

Quite where this leaves us unfortunate inhabitants of the UK who will only get 240bhp anyway (emssions control) is a good question. I suppose the results from Laguna Seca will match what we end up with so things have improved slightly.

Nobody even knows what the MPS RX-8 will have under the hood, nevermind the price. Right now it's just a concept. The RX-7 will be the next big thing, then probably later the MPS RX-8.

Good choice in color, and in the car. Make sure to let us know when the deal is done!
