Noise/clank when turning engine off?

Hey all, got a quick one for ya...and I searched it out and couldn't find anything really similar.

Since i've gotten the car, i've noticed that after the engine is warmed up and all, I'll drive to where i'm goin, and then go to turn the engine off. It almost sounds like something coming to a haltering/stammering stop, almost like a clanking stop. I'm not sure if it's transmission or engine, but I know that anytime I've got the windows down, it's definetely there. When I turn off the engine, i have the car in neutral with the clutch fully engaged.

If this normal, or have any of you noticed this? It's not enough to scare a person outside the car or anything, but it just sounds...abrupt for when you turn the engine off.

What do you all think?

its like a clank when you turn the engine off? i get that too. you get to hear it a lot more when you do it inside the garage. it's fine.

Stavesacre21 06-03-2006 01:52 AM

Come to think about it, I hear it a lot more often when I'm in the hospital's parking garage... that's definetely where it's most distinct.

Glad to see i'm not alone...not sure if it's the rotary by nature or the transmission finally resting, but it certainly had me a lil concerned when I first heard it. And yea, a stammering clank is the best way to describe it. thanx :)

Correct. It's an electrical relay or solenoid de-energizing.

Stavesacre21 06-03-2006 07:08 AM

i'm rather suprised its electrical to be honest...i'd have defientely guessed it was mechanical. Reassuring nonetheless that it's nothing serious :) thanx all

when you turn the engine off the SSV flaps open and closed to make sure its not stuck

DOMINION 06-03-2006 06:04 PM

^Ahh thats what that is. Thanks Zoom44

Freddie 06-03-2006 08:40 PM

^^^ What he said. Great info. Is the SSV operated by vacuum, or electrically?

It's a known fact that snakes are attracted to planes, not car transmissions.

Whats the SSV?

And, it does it without you ever turning the engine on. Put it in accessory mode, right before the engine cranks - then turn it off. Clunk

I'd guessed that's what the "clack" (that's how *I'd* describe it) about a second after shutdown was, but, I couldn't guess why the SSV would've been opened while the car was at idle..... Makes perfect sense now. Thanks Zoom.

Cattywampus 06-05-2006 02:28 PM

or it could be the flywheel. It does the same on the G coupes and the 350 z's. Or it could really be the ssv thingy.

Glad to see i'm not alone...just found it rather funny that the topic has never been covered before! Or maybe i'm just search deficient. :pat:

and i was wrong here- i forgot the actual source and as you'lll see in those threads it isnt the first time :)

if the test failed you would get a CEL with the following code

DTC P2119
Throttle actuator control throttle body range/performance problem
DETECTION CONDITION

* The PCM compares the TP with default TP when the ignition switch is turned off. If the TP is higher than the default TP, the PCM determines that there is a throttle actuator control throttle body range/performance problem.

* Diagnostic support note

This is a continuous monitor (CCM).

* The MIL illuminates if the PCM detects the above malfunction condition in two consecutive drive cycles or in one drive cycle while the DTC for the same malfunction has been stored in the PCM.

* PENDING CODE is available if the PCM detects the above malfunction condition during the first drive cycle.

* FREEZE FRAME DATA is available.

* The DTC is stored in the PCM memory.

So, just out of curiosity, are the aux. and secondary shutter valves tested anywhwere?

Gosh dang it....I freakin knew someone would find this somewhere if they looked hard enough! I search under clank/bang/shimmy/bang/studder/shudder and lock. Of course it wouldn't be any of those words.

Blasphemy.

zoom44 06-06-2006 09:20 PM

clank was the search subject :) see highlight=clank :)

really i found it cause i knew it was there because i was in the thread :)

stickman 06-07-2006 06:08 PM

I never hear any clank but the engine does say "ah shit, I wanted to do more" when I shut it off.
