Only time will tell. But I agree that some improvements in '06 will be needed to keep the public's interest. A top performance model (aka Mazdaspeed) with a big hp increase (~300 hp) and track ready suspension is needed to raise the RX-8's image. While modest hp and torque additions would benefit the normal models, say around 255 hp and 170 lb tq. A 5 speed auto and a SMG like transmission that can handle the 9k rpm of the high power unit would further enhance and widen appeal.

I get the feeling the 8 is not in such demand in the states. I constantly hear about people buying them at little over invoice. I hope Mazda is making enough dough to justify bringing back the RX-7 and offer a forced induction (turbo preferred) 8.

Mazda and Nissan are going to be very conscious of raising the price too high to keep mass markets. That's what killed off their flagship products the first go round.
Seeing how Mazda is part of Ford these days, don't be surprised if you see a Mustang-like approach to marketing. A low priced stripper for those who want the cool style but won't spend a lot on the car and then a massive option list. Fully optioned Mustangs can go for 3x a base model.
