Newbie asks: Recalls, Mileage, Oil Change, Reflash?

Hi all, new member here. Been reading the forum for a while and it's time to ask a few questions. I've gained a lot of info from searching but some of it seemed outdated, so here I go:

I am getting ready to take my 2004 8 in for recall work and I've read a lot about people having their car reflashed during this work. My MPG is awful. I am getting as bad as 11 MPG doing probably 80% city driving. I admit I drive pretty hard but that seems really bad. In any case, should I ask for a reflash while it's in, or will they just do it?

I took my car to Jiffy Lube for it's first oil change since I bought it the other day. They used the right oil and everything but I'd seen some stuff about oil coolers needing to be emptied and such. Did I make a mistake? Should I have taken it to Mazda? Should I take it to Mazda NOW and get it redone?

Thanks for any light you can shed. This forum is an awesome resource.

1.) I measured 9 mpg shortly after getting my car last Dec. That was all in-town. It's improved a lot since then, to around 17-18 in-town and 24-25 highway. There have been two reflashes.

2.) I don't think Mazda will do anything but a normal oil change.

Thanks for the response V. Did you have to do anything special at your dealer to get the reflashes? Beg? Plead? I'm just trying to be prepared when I go in to get everything I need

Oh cool, thanks! Hopefully it helps some with the MPG. I don't mind paying to play, but sometimes it hurts a little

The first one was done after a CEL (check engine light), the first and only CEL I've had. The second one had to do with the recall.
