The rotary engine does sound different and will have low torque until about 4K, then it will come alive and really pickup speed. Missing? it should always feel smooth. What do you mean by "sounds like its missing"? At idle?

It could be many things. The spark plugs could do that. You might check them. They should be changed between 30K and 37K. You might bring to dealer(tell them what it is doing) and show them this "TSP-MSP". They will load the latest "Flash" and might change the plugs and flush the carbon out of the engine.

Are you saying that you can't hear the car idle? As long as you don't try to start the car again, what's wrong with that?

Like I said it could be many things. One is the Spark Plugs could need replacing. They could be worn or dirty. Please read the STICKYS and FAQ at the top of the Discussion page. You can learn a lot about the Rotary engine, like did you know the engine is Oil Injected and will require you to add oil occasionally(if you neglect this oil adding you could ruin the engine). Go to a Mazda dealer and have them print out the service record for the car and see if all the "TSB" are up to date. Here is a site that has all the "TSB" for the RX-8. Read your manual there is more info in it.

i know the engines are oil injected. i have owned a 88 and 90 rx7 and they had close to 200,000 miles on them. and again what i mean by missing is if the car is in park and running, and you get out and go to the back of the car, you can hear from the exhaust what sounds like a miss.

I think he means the sound isn't consistent coming out of the exhaust pipes, like a v8 would sound if one of the pistons isn't firing properly or not at all. Mine sounded the same but I think it's normal you're just hearing the rough idle of the engine, probably small popping and backfiring going on. These cars don't idle all that smooth. Just to be safe you can check your spark plugs and coils.

Yep, I get some snap, crackle, pop out the tailpipes (although the engine is purring smooth up front) especially when the exhaust is cold - even more so after I put the GReddy SP2 on it seems.

yeah that sounds like the backfiring etc which i believe all 8 owners hear just from the unburt gas in the exhaust....i think ur ok as long as it still feels powerful but wouldn't hurt to change the plugs.......
