New or Used

I'm getting an rx8 this summer, but I'm debating weather or not to get a young 1-2 year old low miles car or buy one brand new. I never want to take the hit on the depreciation for driving it off the lot, but these days the initial hit isn't as bad as it used to be, and it's nice to have a new warrantee. Plus you can really save some money on the financing with a new car. What's your take on this particular car and how the money works out?

It really depends on your circumstances. I would have the car checked out and trust a '09 or '10. It will save you around 10K.

Get brand new.

8 does not sell like hot cakes so you might be able to get 1-3K off INVOICE + good financing offers (sometimes 0%, but u gotta wait)

a good 09-10 sounds good, but if the owner sold it for 10K or so miles 90% of the time they treat the car like **** and beat the crap out of it.

At least it won't have a carbon problem because they redline it reguarly.

Plus many people sell a car with low miles just because they don't like it.

I have done that a few times.

I say

If you get it new you wont think twice about selling it for some time.

If you get one used you'll probably go through the love/hate of the car more and think about selling it every now and then... Just as you would do with any used car.

Whatever you can find the best deal on is probably what you should go for...

Like you pointed out as well, if the manufacturer has some great incentives/rebates/financing out for a new vehicle, then that could offset the savings that you could get from buying slightly used.

I know that if I would've waited a few months, I would've ran into a used '10 R3 with 5k miles, for about $23-24k, and located locally. That would've been $2-3k worth of savings for me, which is very good, but some people like myself wouldn't mind paying a couple grand more in order to get into a new vehicle instead... I guess it all depends on what's the most logical decision for you, and what you find in your area.

What do you guys usually end up paying in maintenance once the warrantee runs out? I used to do all of my own work, but I have 2 kids and a demanding job so I don't really have time to screw around under the hood anymore. That's the main reason I got rid of the 10AE and I'm getting an 8.

I would never buy a new car. That's just me though. I've gotten too many good deals on cars that I've kept for many years to not get used. It really depends on how long you want to keep the car. If you want to keep it for 10 years then depreciation won't really matter much, will it?

It seems to me that there are some pretty great deals to be had on 2010 stock right now. Just last week I saw a brand new 2010 GT marked down to $33K (from $44K) at Elite Mazda (Gatineau, Quebec). They offer 0% financing on it for up to 72 months.

That's pretty appealing I think, I just got an '06 with low kms and am very happy with my purchase but when I saw that deal it almost made me reconsider.

Edit: I don't work for them btw - I'm just a little enthusiastic I guess !

Another reason I wouldn't buy a new RX-8 is because I really don't like the Series II aesthetics.
