New Rx8 Break In

Hey guys!

Just wanted to ask some questions abou the break in period.
(i read the Racing beat advice and the original mazda advice), but i wanna see how everyone else did it.

im thinking of the following:
0-1000km Nothing above 3000rpm
1000-2000km Until 4000rpm
2000-3000km Until 5000rpm
3000-4000km Until 6000rpm
4000-5000km Until 7000rpm

after 5000km, i guess the engine will ahve been operating smoothly enough to allow me to push it in the future.

I would follow mazdas advice (dont get me wrong, i wanna get the car going as soon as i get it!!!! lol ) but beacuase i live in Athens, Greece. Im afraid of the extreme tempeture conditions that arise around may.

Do you think that this kind of break-in could prove to be more harmful?

I just baught my 05 RX8 this past saturday (takes a bow)..And im following the manual where it states "no break in period is necessary". I have been playing around with this car and seing what it can do..And obviously I love it.... I certainly will not wait 5000km before I go over 60..Its a sports car, just dont understand why the excessive breakin period time would be neccesary of this is what its made for?

I followed the rule of taking it easy for the first 600 miles, under 4000 RPM, vary speeds, etc. Once I went past that I've driven it however I want, though I haven't really gone nuts with the RPMs yet.

You can run it in a lot faster than that. Keep the revs below 4k for the first 1000km (600 miles), then start pushing it gradually. Initially rev it up to 4.5k a few times, then rev up to 5k a few times, and so on until you get to 9k. Spread your climb from 4k to 9k over another 1000km and you should be fine.

Personally, I found it very difficult to keep the revs in check. The one violation of my rule was once when I was pushing it to 7k, I overtook another car and looked down to see almost 8.5k when I was done. Then when I hit 1000 miles, I got my first beep. Truly exhilarating.

I think this is the best way to go about it. Many people even contest that no break in period is needed for new cars. But these 2000 mile + breakins are a little out of hand if you ask me. You bought the car, enjoy it!

Barfo ... I think that your break-in is EXTREMELY conservative!! I think that you will go crazy from keeping the revs below 3000 for the first 1000km. Unless you do LOTS of driving and will put on mileage fast, I suggest a more liberal approach.

Here are a couple of break-in procedures that I collect back when I was a noob. I personally followed the Japanese Rotary Mechanic procedure, as it's not too conservative and not too liberal.

I don't think that the higher temperatures in Athens will adversely affect your engine (folks in Texas, Australia, California, Singapore, etc chime in), as long as you maintain proper oil and coolant levels. Good luck!




RACING BEAT
- For the first 1000 miles (1609km) do not accelerate under full throttle.
- During the first 1000 miles (1609km) do not exceed 4000 RPM.
- For miles 1000-2000 (3218km), expand the RPM upwards - but do not accelerate at full throttle.
- Over 2000 miles (3218km), full throttle and high RPM is acceptable.

Japanese Rotary Mechanic
0-600 (965.4km) Follow the Manual, but keep it under 4000
600-800 (965.4 - 1287.2km) Open it up a bit, vary accelerations and speed RPM < 5000
800-1000 (1287.2 - 1609km) Drive the car, enjoy it but still keep RPM's < 6000
1000-1250 (1609 - 2011km) Drive it as it's powercurve intended it to be RPM's < 7000
1250-1500 (2011 - 2413.5km) Test the car frequently from RPM's 6000-9000 in every gear
> 1500 (2413.5km) Drive it anyway you want, U DA MAN NOW!!!!!!

Mechanic
0-100 miles 4000 rpm
100-200 miles 4500 rpm
200-300 miles 5000 rpm
300-400 miles 5500 rpm
400-500 miles 6000 rpm
500-600 miles 6500 rpm
600-700 miles 7000 rpm
700-800 miles 7500 rpm
