CO New Guy Checking In

Collected a new 09 pearl white last month, now with 912 miles on it and its first oil change done.

I've test driven these things about 6 times, couldn't ever bring myself to pull the trigger, but the $5000 rebate last month plus another $2000 thrown in by the dealer seemed reasonable.

Used the DIY section to scope out what I needed for the first oil change, collected an oil sample for Blackstone during the change to see what Mazda factory fill might look like.

Being a practitioner of the "gee is that engine oil hot as it spills all over my hand while trying to get the plug out" method of oil changes, I was quite surprised by the kind of heat in this oil after my usual more than around the block warmup routine.

While I might use all the leftover 5w-20 I have for winter storage fill and such, I think I might be easing right on up into the 5/10w-30's or even 10w-40's once the weather warms or a trip is in order.

Anyway, I won't be a prolific poster but I figured for the info I've already gathered, I should as least delurk, maybe drop off an oil analysis or two and some fuel mileage stats.

Congrats! I'm on the fence right now too between a white 09 GT/premium pkg and a Mazdaspeed 3. I thought I had finally decided on the RX-8 until I researched resale values and learned that it's abysmal. Don't get me wrong, that's not the only factor when buying a car but it's REALLY bad... Compare residuals:

2009 RX-8 GT Residual 24/36/48/60 months:
49/43/35/29 Months

2010 Mazdaspeed3:
69/61/49/40

If I can get past that in the next 24 hours I'll jump at it... but if I "move on" in a couple/few years, I'll take one heck of a bath. Ugh.

Hey, you're making me second-guess my purchase now...lol. Just bought an 09 GT/premium package with spare tire option last week. It was an impulse buy because the dealer was giving over $10k of the msrp and I got the blessing to "get it!" by my wife. I guess I just have to enjoy the car in the meantime and not worry so much about the resale value down the line.....

I bought the car for the wife, as a daily driver. I stuffed her into 2 MazdaSpeed3's in the hope that would stick ( love that little turbo motor ) but it didn't work, she still wanted the 8.

And yes, resale sucks, but I knew that before I bought and will just have to live with it. Its no worse than her old favorite, the Mustang GT's. I took a bath on every one of those when I traded them as well.

That's why you should never look at a car for investment opportunities!

Just go with the one that you want more... If you think you'll change your mind on the car in a couple of years, then maybe you don't want the 8 as much as you thought?

Welcome. Some pics would be great. Sounds like you're a well-informed new owner so that's great.

I think using up the 5W-20 should be fine than switching to 5W-30 or 10W-40. Premix is always a hot topic around here too.

Yeah, I've noticed the premix threads. I don't know what to think about it yet. I understand the argument being made for it, but I'm not satisfied with the evidence that its A) the only thing keep these engines running or B) addresses the (possibly multiple) root causes for all this trouble in the first place.
