New engine not good

Well I finally picked up my car after waiting about a month for the new engine to be installed. Didn't even make it 15 miles before I noticed how enemic the new engine was. Whenever I hit the gas to "get on it" it hesitated big time. Not only would it hesitate initially but also about halfway through the power band it would hesitate again. Needless to say I took it right back. They now have a call into a regional engineer who is supposedly going to come look at it.
I'm really quite tired of waiting for my rx8 to be right.

So strange that it seems lot of the "bad" engine problems are hit and miss. My engine passed the recall at 65k miles and still purrs. Yet some people have gone through engine after engine. Maybe it has something to do with the install, the not the engine. Dunno.

reason for new engine

Understand that this is a new problem. The engine replacement was to take care of the ongoing flooding issue that Mazda could not resolve combined with chamber compression values that were not within spec across chambers. It never had a lack of power until now with the new engine.
Mine is an 04 6sp with 72k miles

i'm not quite sure i'm understanding all of this. you weren't having issues with lack of power until now but you got a new engine? and the new engine didn't have to do with the flooding issue combined with anything.

The problem is the lousy job Mazda is doing rebuilding the engines (or should I say the 3rd party they hirer to do them). They are taking defective engines throwing in new parts and hoping they will run. Unfortunately many times they don't and that is why you see so many people getting 2 and 3 engines until they get one that works. I guess it is cheaper for Mazda then using a new one.

Remember a rebuilt or new engine will not make full power right away, but rather needs to be broken in carefully for a minimum of 500-600 miles (but more realisticly 1000 miles) or you will have the problems as before.

Prehaps one of the absolute worst things to do to a new or rebuilt rotary engine is get on it hard before it is properlly broken in. It will have issues it's entire life if not broken in correctly before romping on it.

As for not running the new engines hard that is BS. Do you know how many RX8's are driven hard on test runs on the lot before they are sold.
My engine is MISSING and lacking power as soon as I hit the gas.
Don't try to tell me this is because I am driving it to hard!

As someone that has worked on and rebuilt rotary motors for 20+ years, I guess I just must not know...

Or you forgot to read the owners manual eh???

Makes me wonder how many other owners really had bad motors from Mazda, or simply failed to break them in properly and then complain that they have poor gas mileage or high oil consumption or declining compression and power...

Do you know how many people have jumped off bridges and died? Just because someone else did it doesn't mean it doesn't do damage!!!. Just because there are people who rev those motors high when new doesn't mean it is good for them.

Read your manual - it clearly states not to go over 7K RPM or at even the same RPM for extended period of time for the first 1000 miles. I just got a new motor last week - the SM told me the same thing. needless to say, as much as I want to rev this motor up, I am waiting until I get the 1000 miels on the motor.

Your motor - if you don't want to take the time to break it in correctly, no one here loses except you!!

But that piece of *advise* appeared on every single Mazda, including piston engines.

Im not against *break-in* stuff. But hmm seriously speaking, I dont think I followed Mazda's instructions .... I think it was about 150 or 200 miles I rev the **** out of my Renesis. nothing bad happen yet, MPG same as most other ppl.

Well that's all fine an dandy and I have not had this engine over 6k yet however getting back to my problem. It still has lack of power and hesitates and this is not not because I reved it to 6k.

I followed the owners manual break in procedures and then extended it to about 1200 miles before really jumping on the car. My car delivers 12pmg and sucks a quart down about every 700 miles. Makes me wonder why Mazda is sending out defective cars then not honoring their warranty.

Also there is a school of thought that says hammering the car for the first 50 to 100 miles is really the best way to break in an engine. The individual had interesting test result and logic backing up his claim. Not saying he is right or wrong just that history is filled with people who "knew for sure" only to be proven wrong.

I just talked to the mechanic and he said he just test drove it and he said he is experiencing the same power loss and hestiation as well as a pinging noise in the engine. They don't understand what is causing it since they can't get the engine to produce in error codes.
I'm not sure what Mazda will want to do now. The regional rep said he is looking at options for me since he realizes now that my confidence in Mazda is gone.

have they done a visual inspection of the cat??? what you are talking about sounds like a bad cat.. a new motor will not fix it. and a bad cat rarely gives a cel...

also. on the recall.. it is emissions even if you are out of warranty you should be covered. the emissions is mandated by the gov i think it is 100 or 120k miles.

food for thought.

Question

Maybe ask and see if your dealer willing to try this :

Just tell them straight up that, replace the CAT to see if thats really the problem, if its not, take it back out, no one knows that it has been used ....

At least better you keep bugging them everyday. The whole process probably not even gonna take them 15 minutes.

My engine replacement was supposed to be completed by yesterday and is supposed to be ready today. I am concerned that these re-placement engines are just a band aid for something Mazda can't really fix. The shame is that I love the car but if this persist will explore the Florida Lemon Laws. Let you know how mine runs when I get it back.
