New Car Help
Im a junior in high school looking for a new car. I have always like the rx-8 since it came out but lately as ive been researching more I have been really leaning towards the rx-8. I want a car to go to and from school, friends houses, mall, movies, friendly races, and has good performance. The only drawback i see is the mpg and oil and probably insurance.
I need your views on the pros and cons of the rx-8. I realize this is a biased site but i need as much cons as pros, seriously I need to know everything. Oh and I can drive manual.

The oil really isn't as big of a deal as it is made out to be, just check it once a week like when you wash the car. For this category of car, the RX-8 also does quite well with insurance as it has a 1.3L engine and is generally considered a 4 door. The gas millage is bad though, I mean it is to be expected with it being a rotary and a sports car, but definitely consider it as gas prices rise. You might want that gas money for something else.
Aside from the gas though, assuming you get an 2004 with all recalls taken care of, or a later year, it's a great car for the enthusiast driver!

I don't know if this car is right for you....
The car is unique being that is the only current production car that has a rotary engine...that said, it will require a different driving style along with regular maintanance.
I suggest go test drive one and see how it fits you.
BTW, if you are planning on conducting "friendly races", it seems to me that you are talking about mostly sprints from a red light.... then this car is not for you...

as far as gas prices- the mpg is rated the same as my mom's s500 so i sort of understand the gas prices. To tell you the truth, with my job, I am not terribly concerned with gas, that was just the only neg i could find. As far as the friendly races thing i just meant every once in a while ill drive like a jackass to show off to friends to get my speed fix. And i have driven an rx8 and still really like it

ha i just read it that is funny. but as for the "friendly races" you guys are giving me a hard time for it. I don't know why either i know all of you have done a lil red light to redlight challenge with a friend or a car lined up at the light revving at you. I don't even get why that would change anything, I would do that with any car. I would just lose cause it would be slower

this car is not for u for the following reason
1) premium gas @ 17 mpg
2) u want stop light races, the forum don't support street race (i totalled my 1st car doing the same)
3) this car sucks at stop light races, you WILL loose to beefed up econ boxes. it is 180 hp to the wheel.
4) get a civic/accord save gas and learn driving, or i suggest 240 for some rwd learning
5) go to autocross and have some fun.
