Where does it say on the owners manual that warrenty work will be denied if you can't prove oil changes?

I would like someone to explain to me how I'm supposed to prove the interval in which I performed my own oil changes!

the dates on your store receipts for the oil would be the only way

The warranty book (addendum in this case) says that it's the owner's reponsibility to follow the maintenance schedule.

following the maintenance schedule and having the burden of proving it are two entirely different things. When I said change my own oil... I mean't just that... I trust the guy at the jiffy lube maybe two, three notches less than I do the dealership...

I buy my oil in bulk --- typically 5 gallon GTX jugs and flush with an evacuator. How would Mazda propose I prove this if I were the poor guy with the dead engine?

I'm not saying that Mazda's welshing on the warranty is right - it's not. I just replied to Razz's question.

You can keep a log of when you change your oil. You could even do it on Mazda's site. If Mazda insists on acting in bad faith, though, not accepting anything but official receipts from dealers or garages, those records and your swearing under oath to their accuracy will wind up being evidence in a lawsuit.

FWIW, I once posed the question of DIY oil changes to a Honda dealer. The reply was that record keeping wasn't a big deal - if an engine failed because the oil wasn't changed often enough, it's obvious.

This is the first car I've owned where I've had the dealer do all the oil changes. That will work in my favor should there ever be a defect in material or workmanship in the core engine parts.

I had a similar issue.. It's the dealer. My engine went and they needed proof changes were done every 7500 miles or every 3-4 months. I had to make sure to have proof every 3-4 months that oil was bought or it was changed at a garage. They basically checked the oil in there, it was fairly clean and my timeline matched up so with fight I got the engine. I would say screw, and get it towed to a new dealership. Show you did the changes in a timely manner and put up a fight with the service rep.

It's important to understand who is who here. The dealership is not the one who denies a claim under warranty. They present the claim to MNOA, who then accepts or denies it. The dealer can either fight for you (as mine did), or just give up and say you are out of luck. If the dealer won't fight for you, you can call MNOA customer service and pass messages along to the regional service rep, or you could find a new dealer who can try to help you out more.

you are supposed to keep a record/log. either use the pages in the manual or a notebook or a spreadsheet. doesnt matter how you do it just that you can produce it.

There is a way you can add to your service record on Mazdausa.com. That is where I put my oil change records.

Stories like this are the exact reason why I do ALL my work at my mazda dealership, and go the extra mile to take care of the guys that work there. Tips, gifts for xmas, repeat business, and praise go a long way. Even with all my mods, I know that when I ever need warranty work on my vehicle I wont receive any pushback from my dealership because of the money I spend there, and the things I do that go above and beyond what the other 10,000 customers they have do to make them feel appreciated. The reps and techs have become my friends, and it will pay off someday if something unfortunate ever happens!

When I had MIAC, no pushback what so ever. Service MGR took a ride w me, acknowleged issue, called mazda and had my orfice overnighted and installed the next day. THAT is what taking care of your dealership guys gets ya! Great Service!

If you have a little xtra cash and time to buy some doughnuts for them in the mornings a couple times per year, some xmas gifts, etc...it will go a long way! Trust me. They wont forget it.

Yep, I record all my own maintenance there, as well as occasional dealer. Brake pads, xmission/diff'l fluids, 'plugs, etc. as well as oil changes. I figure how can they argue with their own logging system?

I also log my stuff into the Mazda web site. As does the dealer. It would be nice if the dealer's entries were accurate, which is why I also save the printed receipts.

I kind of miss the old days when warranties were just for one year, the service writer talked you out of anything that was wrong anyway, and I could just concentrate on keeping the car running myself. No legalistic rules about record keeping.

You shouldn't have to bribe and buy these people gifts, it's their job. When I do a job for a customer, they pay me and we are both happy. They don't have to bring me gifts, coffee, beer, tequila, for me to do my job. They are the customer, just like you are the customer. If anything they sholud be kissing your ***, not the other way around. If I kept turning away the customers that don't buy me gifts I'd be out of work in no time.

i just bought an aftrmarket warranty. its about $90/month. i dont know how good or how bad it is. I like the rotary engine but this will be the last "newer car" with a rotary engine that I buy. I dont care how you put it, ITS UNRELIABLE. They're getting better I believe. When I had my 1st engine I took "some care" of it. With my new engine, I baby it. Oil change every 2500 miles.Just gave it new coils after only 7500 miles. I dont overfill the oil. I dont drive until the car is warm. I rev it up pretty good 9-10 times a week. always use oct. 93 gas. Basically I take care of this machine. Well after only 10k on my new engine, Im getting the dreaded hot starting problem. Maybe its plug or starter... hmm. i doubt it, and if it is, what other car needs new plugs and starter in such a short time?? haha. oh how i love my rx-8

To each his own. I choose to be proactive in the fact that when my engine blows Ill get a new one with no questions asked. For MINIMAL time and effort this seems a no brainer to me. I can assure you that I will never be in the OPs position. Can you say the same?

Just because you but them stuff does not mean you'll get a new engine "no questions asked"
Have you been buying the Mazda Rep. coffee and bagels? Will it be the same Rep. or dealer manager that looks over your oil change reciepts and maintance history? From what I've been reading it's up to Mazda to decide on engine swaps, not the dealer. And that Mazda employee 750 miles away in the main office didn't even smell the Dunkin Donuts.

Do you mean you sit and idle until the temperature is up? That's not particularly good for the engine. Likely to lead to fouled plugs, for starters. Also not great for the rest of the drivetrain unless you then drive gently until the trasnmsission and rear end warm up.

I just had my engine replaced with factory extended warranty on the motor and they required me to show oil change slips luckily had them done at walmart so just had to call them and get them faxed over. But bad thing is they let some idiot jeep mechanic put in the new motor in and he did something wrong cause it runs worse than the first one. So now waiting on the 2nd new engine to arrive.

Yep. And the burden of proof that you DIDNT is on the dealer. If they can't prove that you didn't do the maintenance, they are legally obligated to follow the warranty.

Yeah, check out this service entry for my 8 on MazdaUSA.com.

I think this makes me the highest mileage Renesis?

(that is my plate number )

The dealer/Mazda/whoever is jerking you around. I had mine towed when the engine died not really knowing what was wrong with it (I know jack about cars) to a dealer I had never dealt with before. It took them awhile to be absolutely sure the engine was shot but when they did figure it out I got a phone call about it and how it would be covered under the engine replacement warranty, which I was only vaguely aware of. No paper work was required on my part all I had to do was be patient because it took a good while to get the car back. The dealer (and apparently Mazda) were proactive in fixing it if anything.

In case it helps or matters, the dealer was Rohrich Mazda in Pittsburgh, PA.

Why are you not telling anyone where you had the oil changes done? Is it because you had them done at a jiffylube type of a joint and are embarrassed/mortified?

The extended engine core warranty also says that you have to keep records.

Not sayin' that they have a right to demand that...just sayin' that they say it.

Cute deal with your license plate appearing instead of mileage. I think one of mine has ten times the actual mileage. Must be right, though, because that's what it says on the printed receipt.
