Need advises...

Hi Everyone, I am totally new here.

I do not own an RX-8 yet but I am planning to. I am pushing myself for a decision.

I am going in to the dealer tomorrow to look at the black R3 2010.

I have done many research on the car and engine matters.

Am I in a time to get a RX-8? How much gas money should I be expecting each month on average. I drive 40-50km a day, and around 150km on the weekend.

On average how much would be the yearly maintenance cost? I am worry that I won't be able to keep-up the car.

I live in Toronto, so I will be going thru snow in winter as well. The R3 is 41xxx$CAD right now, + 13% tax of course. In my mind right now is a pre-owned 2007 G35 and the RX-8 R3 2010. The reason I picked those 2 is because I need the backseats, so a Nissan Z is no good.

Any good inputs will be appreciate.

Thanks in advance.

You are talking about 250 miles per week which I can do on a tank during normal driving over a week. So you are looking at around 49 liters of gas per week. At the going rate of 110 a liter you are looking at $55 bucks or so a week in gas. About every 4th fillup, or around once a month you need a quart of oil on top of your normal oil changes. So lets say about $4K in maintenance a year including gas.

+coils, plugs, and wires for ~$300 US (not sure the conversion) every other year if you stay steady on that rate.

We highly recommend a 2nd set of wheels for your winter tires instead of just putting winters on your R3 rims (R3 rims are ~$1200 each, not to mention 19" winters are expensive and not as effective as 17", which is the lowest you can go), so that is another $800-$1300, depending on your tire and rim.

I posted in your other thread

(BTW its bad form to start multi threads of the same topic)

LOL Toronto, I thought Toronto could do anything why not just change the laws of nature to suit your yearly maintenance and mileage needs?

You won't need to add any extra oil to the Series II, just change your oil every 2500 to 3000 miles.

Coils/Plugs/Wires if they go out are under warranty so no big deal there.

Get the R3 the G37 isn't worth it.

^^^^^^ WHAT?!??!!?

Are you sure?

Changing your oil twice as often instead of just putting in a quart isn't logical or even remotely make sense.

Having owned both a Series I and Series II I shall provide my PERSONAL experience.

My 07 RX-8 GT Series I - Required 1 qt of oil on average every 763.2 miles. (about 3 fill ups)

My 09 RX-8 R3 Series II - Required 1 qt of oil during the break in period from when I owned it (3 miles to 2500 miles). Changed the oil at 2500 miles and now I'm at 5345 miles and ready to change it again. I've checked the oil level every month and it's not dropped enough to even put half a quart.

I'm running Royal Purple 5W-30 in case anyone wants to know.

I wasn't saying that changing it more often makes sense, I was stating that the Series II (imho and personal experience) require a lot less oil, virtually no additional oil if you change every 2,500 miles.

BTW here is a Series II oil change DIY if you need one OP.

https://www.rx8club.com/showthread.p...48#post3270348

It's also in the DIY section but the pictures are linked vs. in the forum.

Good luck with your purchase!

Wow, that very interesting Are-Ex-Eight....

Being a Series I owner that will likely get a Series II or now with the news release of the RX 7 and RX 9 in 2012 .......

Where I was going is I would be worried the apex seals are not getting enough oil if my oil usage was that low.

Just say'n

Time will tell. I'll post when my engine rips apart lol. Wait on the 2012's, not a big difference between I's and II's. I went back and bought a Series II only because I traded in my Series I and regretted it.

kenken3686 05-30-2010 10:10 AM

What is this Series I and II thing? I am confuse.

RIWWP 05-30-2010 10:49 AM

Series 1 = 2004 through 2008

Series 2 = 2009 and 2010

It's not that series 2 doesn't burn oil, it does. Series 2 just has a larger oil capacity, so it can burn more oil before needing a top-off/refill. One of Mazda's changes to improve the perception to the public that finds adding a quart every 1,000 miles onerous and terrible.

Hey did no one else notice.... I thought 2009 was the only year with black, red, and blue r3's..... 2010 only has red and blue. Just look on their website and i could have sworn when customizing an r3 you only had 2 color choices.

edit: i guess he is in canada so they have them there, making this a pointless post :)

ps. effing sweet he can get them in grey too :( canada gets all the good r3 colors)
