NC: Car Inspection, Emisions test couldn't be done

I have searched the forums but couldn't find anything. I took my car for it's 1 year inspection today. I took it to a place called Snappy Lube. I took it here because I trust them more with my car. I can drive it into the garage myself and watch every move they make while they are inspecting my car. After about 20 mins of "Inspecting" he charges me only $10(for those who don't know in NC it costs almost $30 with emissions inspection). The technician advised that he had never seen this but that my onboard computer would not communicate with his, while he was doing the emissions inspection. So he certified my car but said I might get a letter in the mail from the DMV requiring I take it to the dealership to finish the inspection. Has any one had this happen in NC or anywhere. Just wondering what to expect next.

I also got a thumbs up from the other technicians on how good the car looked.

That's pretty stange. The Inspection station has been there for less than a year. You would think they would have the latest equipment. Thanks for the info. I guess I'll be getting that letter in the mail from the DMV then.

Do other cars run the can protocol? That's a real inconvienience.

WOW, thats nice to know. What part of NC are you in? I'm in Charlotte so far I have gone to the dealer but I only had one oil change and a flat fixed.

Actually, it's an inconvenience that older vehicles run OBD-II which is slower and provides fewer monitors and features.

By 2006 (?) all new cars will be on CAN.

IL inspections don't start until year 4.5 after delivery. I've never had to take a car to emissions inspection because I lease for four years.

can protocol
Can, lol..., you tell me what "can" is? I've heard of ODB but not about CAN. Is it a new programing code or something? Is this maybe why people are finding it difficult to upgrade the ECU in the 8?

Maybe it's been too long since I've done one (vehicle safety/emissions inspection), but when I used to work for a dealership in NYC, the emissions test was strictly a sniffer up the tail pipe to read the emissions levels and an RPM clamp for a plug wire. Why do they need access to the ECU????
