Just one more little input, when you have finished field testing you can try to get hold of Mazda publication 9999-95-102F-04 which gives you Mazda's version of the vatious parts of the system discussed here and how they function. Then you can sort the manure from real information.(of course this assumes that Mazda know what in fact they designed and built)

This is for those who think rear brake action is not invoved in Mazda's RX-8 TCS

now find the part of the manual that explains what the Limited Slip Differential does and find out there will not be any wheel speed difference under acceleration...

Applying the brakes to one rear wheel only with an LSD creates horrible noises - as experienced when the DSC system does in to get you out of a slide.

Thanks....

Although I don't think this video demonstrates the difference between pushing the button and push and hold the button...

1st run: DSC/TCS on @ 100kph
2nd run: DSC/TCS on @ 110kph
3rd run: DSC/TCS hold for 7 seconds.......

so what about pushing DSC/TCS???? without the hold....maybe I missed it...

So take your car out in the snow or other low,low friction surface, turn off the DSC/TCS and try accelerating in a straight line at a decent rate.Tell me how good your LSD is.Then try the same excercise with the DSC off but the TCS still active.

Or not as you wish.

MazdaManiac 07-14-2006 02:16 PM

In the above excercise, the LSD will work perfectly. You still won't go anywhere, but both wheels will spin equally.
With the TCS on, the PCM will snuff the throttle everytime you stomp on it and will "assist" the LSD by clamping whichever wheel looses traction first.
It is a great system for adding insult to injury - instead of just being stuck, your car is now taunting you.
My experience with this nary two weeks after purchase is documented elsewhere.

after driving this thing through 2 winters..

With DSC on in the snow, I floor it and the computer takes all control of the gas pedal away. After you get going, it starts to modulate the throttle and you get repeated periods of wheel spin and harsh throttle reductions... if the car kicks sideways the DSC modulates individual brakes to straighten you. I'd say it has a 15-30 degree allowance of yaw rate before it intervenes.

One touch DCS off, you can do a 1/4 mile long burnout with the 2 plumes of snow flying out behind you (thanks to the LSD!!!) with the car fish tailing all over the place ... i have definately done this on several occasions since its fun as hell. There is no intervention ever that i've found even with the tires spinning 40 mph faster then your actually going.

The 7 sec mode does the same thing...

My experience matches MMs

To further this - with all the nanny modes working, my car has DIED while trying to start on a slippery surface. The brakes would clamp enough to stop all motion and kill the engine.

zoom44 07-14-2006 05:01 PM

yeah DSC on sucks in the snow

no, its awesome in the snow as it has saved my arse on many many occasions. This car can be extremely twitchy in the snow IMO.

the downside is if your on the verge of getting stuck say going up a hill, the traction control has the habit of slowing you down and making you lose momentum... or if you are stuck you need some wheel spin to help get you going

Once on the track at Summit Point / Shenandoah Circuit I forgot to turn off the DSC, and it did something really strange, but under unusual circumstances... I was in the banked turn (or "Karussel") going a moderate speed, and the DSC kicked in. While I was nowhere's near sliding out, I suspect it got confused by the weird angle and activated itself.

I did the same thing there but was going fast. It kicked in and also cut the throttle in an attempt to figure out what the hell I was doing. Here is a pic of another car on the loop.

Yeah, that's the place. :) It's funny, but in the pic it doesn't look like a very steep bank, but when I'm on it, it feels like it's about 45 degrees.

Are you heading back there any time soon? I plan to go there with Mazdadrivers in September.

Edit: Add pic

expo1 07-14-2006 09:54 PM

I am already booked for Sept 9th & 10th with Mazda Drivers :) I liked that track, very fair to cars like the RX-8 & higher HP cars. I also liked the blind left turn known as the 'HOOK' Here is a small vid taken on my last trip LINK
PM me if you wish to share some expenses.

MazdaManiac 07-14-2006 11:35 PM

Have you driven the new course, yet?

As far as weird DSC activation, I just was screwing around with my alignment and added too much toe (4mm) and that tripped the DSC in a mild right turn into a parking lot!

I was on the Shenandoha Circuit 6/2005 and will go again 9/2006. There are two other tracks at Summit Point but the club I am in doen't rent them. The Layout PDA used 6/2005 was like the one in the map.

Yes, the Shenandoah Circuit is the new course. I was there last September with Mazdadrivers too, and I'm signed up for this September 9-10 too. :icon_tup:

One thing they did last year and may do again this year... You see Turn 18 on the map, where it connects Training Loop to the Cave Esses? They used that shortcut last year to bypass the Pit Straight. The concern is that coming out of the Downhill S onto the Pit Straight, there's a concrete pit wall on the outside of the turn. So they bypassed it for safety reasons.

Mohammad_1992 05-30-2012 01:56 PM

did any body change the rear tires into the front tires put them in the rear tires? the car with the curve lines light is always on at the dashboard ? is changing the tires is the reason ??

RIWWP 05-30-2012 02:05 PM

6 year thread resurrection

This likely means that your tires are not the same circumference. This could be based on tire pressure changing or actually differently sized tires. The traction control system is seeing a problem in the different rotation rate of the front and rear and can't figure out what is going on, so disabled the system.
