My Rx8 Is Slow

I hear everyone talking about how they can "chirp" their tires in 1st, 2nd, and 3rd gear. I however have a hard time getting mine to chirp in 2nd most of the time. I have the stage 2 map and the CZ and no other mods. The CZ def. made a difference from 6500 to redline. but overall it just seems sluggish. wait, I don't want to say sluggish as in slow...just sluggish as in there is no way I'm making 200 hp.... A couple of times recently I have had a hard time getting up a big hill early in the morning when it was cold near my house. The engine seems to bog down @ about 4k... If i down shift and get the RPMs up it runs fine. Again this is only in the morning when it's cold outside. Anyone have any idea's? Thanks

when your engine isn't warmed up, it has self imposed limits... this might be what you're seeing.

when you say you have the stage 2 map, have you tuned it, or are you using a stock map with no changes? Tuning the stock maps will help a great deal with additional power.

also if you have an old cz unit, your coils might have been burned, but if that were the case, you'd be really, really slow - and you don't sound like you're describing that.

Have you tried disabling your CZ and doing some runs? If it's bad both ways, I'd be suspicious your coil packs being fried, unless you had problems before the CZ... in that case I would imagine that something must have triggered a CEL to reduce your performance that much (clogged cat, fouled plugs/misfire, etc). It doesn't take much for me to get a ton of wheel spin in 2nd, and a very healthy chirp in 3rd, and I'm all stock. Even my wife has squealed 2nd and 3rd .

You can chirp the tires in any car in any car if you change gear badly enough. :D

I am running the Stock stage 2 map. I don't have a canscan so I haven't been able to tune it to my car.

but again, even before I got the CZ it was hard for me to chirp 2nd....I'm afraid that I just got one of the slower ones off production line.

Also I asked this question before, and never got an answer. With me running the stage 2 map what will the effects be with me only having a stock cat? Will it melt, clog, or just not last as long? Thanks for your help guys!

No "mostly stock" RX8 can chirp its tires going into 3rd gear, unless it has VERY bad tires.

Your stock cat isn't going to last half as long if your stage 2 settings are lean. I can't tell you how long it will last, but I'd say 30-80k miles would sound about right.

It could be that you have one of the slower cars, but the ECU mod would lean it out and give you back much of the lost power.

Your driving style may also be a significant factor.

To help with low-rpm power, I placed 2% reduction in airflow voltage from 1250 rpm (w/c is actually 2500 rpm). From 10 - 100 throttle. No change in ignition.

My map is based on Stage 2, but I have changed the upper range settings to work with my car. I believe I have the slower stock cars, but now the pull is just crazy!

Driving style? You mean how the car learns that I drive? If that is the case I drive like a grandma 70% of the time and like a crazy man the other 30%. I have not been doing the brake tap thing. Do you think that would help?

I can easily get a big screech on the 1-2 shift with the DSC/TCS off, and a little chirp on the 2-3 if done at the redline and "slamming" the shifter and not lifting (so the engine hits the revlimiter during the shift).

Not exactly good for the car, but I can do it.

Nothing slow about my BOX STOCK RX-8.

... $50 bucks says your leading coils are BURNT.

Happened to me when I used the CZ mod.... Lots of posts about it...

If, in 6th gear @ 40mph..you floor it, and it doesn't accelerate... you've got burnt coils.. (hell, if it doesn't really accelerate above below 4k to speak of even in a "reasonable" gear, they are burnt).

I disagree. I did it when my car had about 3000 miles on it on a somewhat cold morning. I was shocked to hell, but it happened. Oh, traction control was turned off BTW. My tires still look new, and they're the same that I had back then. I'd say it probably has more to do with temp (road temp), and surface more than just the tires. Oh, my car is still completely stock (except my chrome valve stem caps ).

I'd say you are correct; that was the result of the surface (Cold streets) more than anything...the rx8 is pretty quick/powerfull...but 3rd gear 'chirps'? hmmm...maybe I'll have to see it to believe it eh?

I think you have problems going up hills cause you have no torque.

It absolutely can do it... I've experienced it several times with TCS off in all temps and plenty of tread on the tires (although it's easier in the cold with stock tires). Keep in mind this is going from 2nd to 3rd at 8-9k rpm... there's plenty of power up there to do it.

Hmm my car always seems to be ultra sensitive when it's cold. Accellerates a lot quicker at a given rpm than when warm. Sometimes I'll bog a little when stopped at a light when warm and I have to give a little more gas and let go of the clutch a little higher to get decent accelleration.

My car is stock and I was disapointed when I took it to the track, I did expect more out of it then what I got, but then I did not buy it just for performance. My previous car was a Mazdaspeed protege, of the boat at 170 hp. it ran about 1 1/2 seconds faster in the quarter then my 8. So needless to say, my car won't see the track anymore since I was beat by a full size nissan truck.

My husband thought it was just me driving, so he drove it and it ran the same.

Is your '8 an auto or 6 speed? If it's a manual, then you have something wrong with your car... just what was your quarter mile time??
