My moms looking at buying an RX8 but I have some concerns....

Does your Mom want performance? or just a cute little coupe to style around in? I would not get an slush box RX8. If she is looking for a little performance in a couple try an auto GTO or if spring can spring for a 10 K more maybe G35c with an auto. I will probably get flamed but a Crossfire or the Volvo C70 would be a good mom friendly coupe.

many people, like myself, have been putting regular 87 octane in since we got the car with no ill effects, and some are actually getting better mileage than with premium.
do your homework.

I was at this community meeting with my family, and this little old lady says" .. so I hear that you have an RX8 too." I asked her if she got an automatic, and looks at me as if I had called her an animal abuser and says "manual of course". What was I thinking. There were no automatics when she learned to drive, all cars were rear drive, and traction control was a sandbag in the trunk.

Sorry guys I talked her out of it. It just wasnt the car for her. Poor mileage combined with too much upkeep compared to a regular car shyd her away from it. She really didnt want to not get it but she knows she wont be able to remember to check the oil every 1000 miles and she knows she'll flood it out by "just backing it out of the garage and shutting it off" at least once.
She needs something fun but with a little less maintance. She likes the 350Z but she didnt like that it didnt have a backseat. Even if she wont be having anyone ride with her back there it nice to have more space to put stuff. She likes the Crossfire but she hasnt gone to actually look at one. At this point shes not really sure what she wants now. All she knows is that the RX8 was the only car so far that really excited her to drive.

You know, checking the oil really isn't that big of deal. When you love a car as much as everybody loves their 8, those extra moments you spend with it are ones to cherish. tell her to buy it. life is short. give your mom some credit she's made it this far in life, she can handle it. there are a lot of women 8 owners and they all do just fine with the oil. in fact, i don't think any of the women on this site have any problems, it's all the guys that complain. oh, and this car rocks in the snow with snow tires.

I have an automatic and the milage in the city seems to hover around 14-17mpg. I am also a very aggressive driver so I tend to burn fuel rather quickily. It does pretty well on the interstate (around 20mpg).
She will have to rev it up to 7000 rpm's every other day. The carbon build up will get bad if she doesn't. I even use She doesn't have to drive fast to do this, just put it in second gear and hit the pedal, it should rev up easily. I use Lucas brand injector cleaner to aid in the process. It should not flood if you warm it up for two minutes before driving.
The oil will have to be checked frequently. This includes transmission fluid.
I haven't driven in the snow yet, but the car handles phenominally. I live on a road that has really bad curbs and I have no problem taking some of the worst ones at 80+ mph without crossing the center line.
If she has no problem getting her hands dirty every now and then, this should be the perfect car. You could even make a deal with her. You'll take car of the oil and transmission fluid checking if she lets you take it for a drive every now and then.
I absoulutely love my RX-8 and plan to buy another one in about three years.
