My engine is going to be replaced - Help
I'm a veteran RX8forum Member, but I haven't posted in a while. Life took over! I have done the searches, but here's my sitaution.
1. Power Loss in my car @ 6k.
2. Dealer to replace Engine.
3. Dealer has not looked into the Cat issue I have read in the forum. May solve my problem.
The question is:
Should I wait for a new engine, or should I tell them about the cat. My wife and I have flooded the car a couple of times. What would you do? Please advice. Have to pick a rental on Monday.
Cheers

I completely agree with expo,
You GOTTA have them check that CAT asap.
If you don't mind me asking, how did you and your wife flood the car so much?

But the question is: is it worth holding off telling them about the cat until I get a new engine? I have 20K on my old engine, but I'm not sure if it is better to leave the car as it comes from factory?

Cat replacement would be a few days an engine takes weeks and if it was the cat add a few more days to get after a new engine. How long do you want to drive a Dodge Neon??

Bummed, but bring on OU!
That and these forums are occasionally monitored (see Abbid's warranty thread), and Mazda might be a little miffed that you possibly swindled an engine out of them.

Going through the SAME thing. Finally got them to agree to check the Cat while the exhaust system is off during the engine replacement. My replacement is only supposed to take about a week. Got a nice Mercedes C230 to drive while its in the shop.
Must be something going on to just "replace the engine" but as long as they fix the problem.........

Long time no see ---
Did they do a compression check on the rotors?
If they replace the engine, & the cat is the culpret, you'll be no better off.
My suggestion, recommend to them while they have the exhaust disconnected to check the cat. You may get your car back sooner than what they thought.

All I will say about classic Mazda is I trust their service as much as I trust their sales dept.
That is why I have never bought a car from them and I drive 45 minutes to longwood to have my car serviced at cory fairbanks.

Agreed!
Is there a consensus here that the engine replacements are happening more with the A/T than the M/T? With so many different threads it's hard to tell.

Mine is AT, being a first year car doesn't help either. I hope Mazda gets it right as they go through failed engines. (starting with MINE! )
I really didn't rev up the engine when I drove it. I am used to driving torquey cars so reving up past 4500 rpm was not natural to me. But after new engine breaks in (that's IF I get the car back and it functions correctly) I need to learn to rev up more.
Yes, LEARN to rev up the engine.

Update;
I talked to the dealarship service dept, personally today. They said they checked the compression and the Cat. The car still needs a new engine. I can not waste more time with this, since I'm going on vacation Thursday. Against this forum's advice and better judgement, I told them to go ahead with the engine replacement. The gave me a Solara in the meanwhile. I'll drive the crap out of the car, but once the warranty expires, I'm trading in the car! I love this car, but w/o the warranty, it is to much of a liability. Thanks
PS: I have a M/T, first year production (08/03 factory production).
PS2: I'm getting an 05 engine.
