My 2004 200K RX-8 resto thread
Well, when I started it this morning, and then again to go to lunch, I didn't notice any significant coolant smell.
However, it was a little hard to start and was running REALLY ******* RICH (in bold, that is how bad it was)
As soon as it cleared, ran great, no misses, no smoke.

those additives would be the ones I'm speaking of. Seems the rotaries work well with them, as long as the issues isn't big.
How rich is it running? Any numbers from a gauge or scanned from the PCM? Does it stay rich in many different driving situations? I know I've always seen rich numbers under load on a stock calibration. Is your MAF dirty? But better a little rich then a little lean, little extra fuel costs less then an engine rebuild.
I've had a couple mornings where the cold start benefited from holding the accelerator all the way down like in a de-flood procedure for a couple seconds before going to start the car. I'm planning a sea foam treatment later this week/weekend since I've never done it yet, so she could be a little dirty on the inside after more then 149k.

It is rich enough at start up to make a pretty large cloud of unburned hydrocarbons out the back!
I did the ESS reset, might need to clean the MAF. Who knows, this bitch is temperamental.

New coils, plugs, RB wires, all filters, oil blah blah blah.
I had injectors in the back of my mind, but I thought the computer was smart enough in these to detect a faulty injector.
The only CEL I have is Secondary Air Injection Solenoid.
I have some Seafoam, and was going to give that a shot.
I am also wondering if I somehow got a bad plug, a bad coil, or a bad wire set. It did not do this when I had the old shitty worn out ignition parts.
So, it was hard to hot start, now it is hard to cold start.

I guess this weekend I am going to try:
-de-carb
-remove the coil bracket, and check the grounds
-take it to the dealer to check the ECU Flash
I am tempted to check the injectors, but that is such a hassle right now.

Got a few things done today.
Polished the headlights, and they look great! The passenger side was yellowed pretty bad. But now looks mint!
I cleaned the MAF, and the TB, de-greased and washed the engine bay, and Seafoamed it.
All to no avail. The car is still hard to start cold, and runs really rich for the first minute or so after initial start up.

I'm in the same boat, I did the Seafoam and all on Friday and still way too rich on start. I'm going to try to run a few injector cleaners and maybe look at the amount of pressure in the fuel system.
I see the same thing too, after I'm running, still a hair rich (get some nice backfires) but still can see up around 20mpg if I'm easy on the gas lol. For my cold starts I've been doing the de-flood procedure with the peddle (about 10secs of cranking or so) and she fires right up.

I also put a can of Seafoam in the tank.
We will see what happens. I am going on a 'test' drive with it Thursday to Chattanooga, about 85 miles plus over a mountain.
If she survives the trip, she is going to DGRRX. If not, I'm taking the Volvo.

She smoked like hell this morning for a good 5 minutes! Funny thing is, it didn't smell odd. I am guessing there was some water in the tailpipes from when I washed it last weekend.
Once that cleared, it drove fine. When I go to lunch, I will update on how well it starts.
FWIW- I did the 'deflood' for a few seconds before I started it this morning, it made a HUGE difference.

Are you confused? You are telling me how to do something I clearly said I already did......and it worked.
Yep, not at all new to rotaries.
Anyway, when I fired it up to go to lunch, WHOLE lotta gas smell from the exhaust, along with the usual smoke.
I have got to have a leaky injector or something.

Thought I popped it today.
I had to drive about 30 miles to the Volvo dealer to pick up a part for the S80. Then it was a gingerly drive about 25 miles down a 2 lane. As I was jumping on the highway for a quick 5 mile jaunt to my exit, a problem occurred.
I was merging with traffic, had in 3rd, and punched it. RPM's climbed to about 5.5K, then it fell FLAT on its face, WTF???? I tried again, and the same thing. So I back down and just accelerate like a normal human.
Everything seemed fine. I look down, and the fuel light had come on. I tried to push it again, and it stumbled again and fell flat around 6K.
Hmm. So I get off my exit, and stop for gas. Fill it up with Premium. As I pull out I say, **** it.
Completely disable DSC and TCS, drop the clutch and hammer down. She put down patch, got sideways and pulled all the way to the beep beep.
I guess my fuel pump doesn't like low fuel.
PS- It barely started after work, but fired right up at the Volvo dealer. POS.

So we will see. As it stands, I am not taking it to DGRR. To much hassle to trailer it home when it grenades in NC.
Doesn't really matter, last year I drove my old Miata. Also, the Volvo will smoke most RX-8's.

You bringing my block with you? What about dickbeater's exhaust? Sorry I never called you back, but this is the super busy time of year for me...no time to BS and all.
We are getting there Thursday evening. So we will have to set something up.
