motor mount replacement - wanting input

so i am pretty certain i am needing my motor mounts replaced on my 05 atx rx-8. my vin fits in the TSB saying that i might have problems. i have had other rx-8 owners sit in my car and they have mentioned how rough my car idles in drive.

i was curious who all has had it done and how much it ended up costing. the local mazda dealership quoted me $445 including parts & labor. and no, i am not going to do it myself. i don't have everything i need and don't really want to try it myself.

any input/feedback would be appreciated.

i didn't even think about it being something that could be covered under the warranty. i just asked them how much it would cost. i'll have to inquire about it.

the 100k warranty is for internal engine issues. Mounts are not going to be covered. But as for being gouged by a dealer your $445 quote is not that bad. Are they going to do both mounts? As others have said its not that hard of a job to do. Maybe you can find another RX-8 owner to help for a case of beer and a pizza?

i've already checked with the typical people i ask to help and he doesn't quote have everything it would take to do it comfortably. i'd rather not risk trying it ourselves for something we aren't really familiar with.

I had the exact same problem, while the car was idle it would shake.

They quoted me $345 dollars to fix the mounts and I had an extended warranty bought with the car (good thing)..At the end of the day I paid a $100 deductible and the problem was fixed.

IIRC- the engine mounts are specifically covered under the earlier 5 year/60k mile warranty extension. So yours may still be covered.

When was your car first purchased. The warranty starts that day and the '05 has a 4yr-50K mile warranty.

well if it is a 4 year 50k warranty, then i am fairly certain that the warranty has expired. i am still waiting on hearing back from the mazda dealership to see if it falls under warranty or not but at the moment, i am not holding my breath.

No, not the standard warranty- the SSP 67 extension made in 2006.

I didn't even realize this warranty existed until I ran across somebody mentioning it here a few weeks ago, and the engine mounts are specifically listed as covered.

Yeah, I guess the later 8yr/100k engine warranty overshadowed that earlier and much more comprehensive warranty extension. But note that warranty is hard to find info on, so you might have to print it out and check with the dealer to make them aware of that warranty.

Wait- at 29k miles, you should still be under the original 4yr/50k mile warranty.

how do you know that motor mounts are bad? I believe mine are bad too, when I put the car in REVERSE, the whole interior shakes and vibrates and then when I put into DRIVE, the vibration goes away a little but sill there, is that definitly the motor mounts?

Time for some new mounts. The early AT's are prone to mount failure. Heck I went through three sets in three years. Two of those sets were the new model from Mazda.
If you have any kind of mechanical aptitude they are easy to change. And they only cost around $70.00 a piece. Much less than the dealer.
