Most embarrassing 8 moment...

Well, I was driving down a fiarly major street with cars all around. I see a silver 8 on the corner and prepare to do the good 'ol wave. As I'm driving by I wave and as I'm waving I realize it appears to be an older woman, probably in her 70s-80s. Wow was I embarrassed, she looked at me confused and I tried to pass it off as if I was scratching my head.

Anybody else have any embarrassing 8 moments or am I the only fool...

edit: Her confusion while looking at me was what made it awkward. Still remember it to this day, lol...

Krankor 11-15-2006 03:57 AM

I don't understand. An old woman in an 8 doesn't deserve a wave?

nycgps 11-15-2006 06:01 AM

Only a chick in their mid 20s deserves it !!!!

Joking Joking :)

Well, if she doesnt understands then ... well nothing.

Wankel_lover 11-15-2006 06:11 AM

Even Grannys can go Zoom Zoom

Also remember...that granny was once a hot chick to some teenager boxing his clown under the sheets thinking about her. Now THAT's a scary thought!!

toxin440 11-15-2006 07:28 AM

HAH! you have made my morning with that term "Boxing his clown" I'm sitting here eating oreos for breakfast before work and i nearly spit one across the room from the laughter at that term.

My most embarrasing moment? There have been about 3 times I'm flying down the highway and im going for 3rd gear but dont pull back far enough and do a grind at high RPM :( THankfully its on the highway and probably no one heard it.

Huskyfan23 11-15-2006 08:32 AM

My most embarrassing 8 moment has actually happened a couple of times. My stupid gearbox is almost impossible to get into reverse, to the point where I have to rock the car back and forth a couple of times to get it to connect  . A couple of times I had thought I was in reverse as is looks the same, but all you can hear is a horrible grinding sound when you step on the gas.

Talk about embarrassing when it happens in public. I've actually been approached and asked if I knew how to drive a manual vehicle. Seeing as how all I've driven is manual since 16 (I'm 26 now), I don't think that's the issue.

deamicls 11-15-2006 08:38 AM

you know you have to push down on the shifter so you can get into reverse right?

Huskyfan23 11-15-2006 08:43 AM

Of course. What do you think, I've been going into 6th the whole time and that's why it's not activating?

It's a common problem on RX-8's. It's because there's no synchro for the reverse gear, although some have more difficulty than others. Unfortunately, mine is one of the more difficult ones.

Wankel_lover 11-15-2006 08:47 AM

Heh...I also thought "Boxing the Clown" was pretty funny when I first heard it.!! Have used it ever since.

Hey, you never know. There was a person who didn't know this and started a thread about it.

I've never had a problem getting my car into reverse. It's smooth as silk.

Ever try putting it in first or second, then into reverse? Seems to line up the syncros better.

OnRails 11-15-2006 09:21 AM

I've done the reverse gear thing too. I've found that if I pull back on the shifter while letting the clutch out it will pop into reverse (if it's not there already) This technique has stopped the embarrassment.

the most embarrassing thing I have done is to leave the windows down but the doors locked. I walk out early in the morning to go to work and reach in, unlock the door, and open it. HONK! HONK! HONK! HONK! ....shit where are my keys ... HONK! HONK! ... crap I left them inside the house ... HONK! HONK! Yea my neighboors loved that one I'm sure. :mdrmed:

I'll try that. Hopefully it will help out.

And I normally do put the car into first and rock forward to help line up the syncro better. It works most of the time, but not all of the time. I just hate it when it looks and feels like it's in gear, but it's on the cusp and grinds instead. Now what I do is concentrate when going into reverse and listen for the connection, and until I hear it, I don't begin driving.

My 2006 Scion did something similar; I would give it just a touch of the gas and it would pop into reverse.

Yeah, my dad's 1984 4 + 3 Corvette did the same thing. A bit of gas, and no problem shifting into gear. I keep forgetting to do that....I'll try it out and see if it helps.

lov2bugu 11-15-2006 10:43 AM

back to the embaressing moments, i saw an 8 today and boy did she have a tail. man i wish i had my phone on me, it was somewhere in the car (you know cornering) that picture would have been picture of the year for this website. the gurly geek was drivingn with A GAZ NOZZLE, and the pipe was touching the ground. i drove up to her and told her that she won't be saving any gas by doing so..... she looked all confused, and i wanted to make things clearer so i told her honey you took the gas station with you. she looked more confused so she flicked me off and took off.... hey i tried ha ha

CarAndDriver 11-15-2006 12:35 PM

Wonder if she was driving a manual.

MyRXdrug 11-15-2006 12:36 PM

Try drifting on ice and hitting a curb in a parking lot with a hot chick in the passenger.
I was more scared I did damage than embarrased, but still embarrased none the less!
And trying to put it in reverse for the 1st time with the gf and my sister in the car with some onlookers. Had to look in the car manual.

VRZOOMZOOM 11-15-2006 12:40 PM

hmm, approached a stop sign at small mall strip. Forgot there was a small incline on the stop sign, traffic both ways are cleared, and i'm about to make a turn left.....vroom, putt, stalled!! LOL. Then i look ahead, some lady in her 40s, just looked at me and she shook her head with a smirk on her face, like u drive stick but stalled haha, so then i started back up, then went :).

The day i picked up the car, first light, no problem, got off the line no problem, 2nd light, left turn only arrow. Arrow turns green, Forgot that i had it in 1st gear, released the clutch too fast, stalled. Had cars behind me honking.....and an S2000 at the opposite side of traffic was smiling, knew what was up lol.

Then entering my garage the first day,,,,,stalled 2x =)

Nopstnz 11-15-2006 12:44 PM

^^^ Don't feel bad, the first time I ever drove stick I remember it pefectly. Had to back out of an awkward garage and stalled at least 15 times.

Actually this was my most embarrassing moment. I was test driving a RX with a stick, I grew up driving stick but because of some job changes and car swapping with the wife I spent the last 3 years driving auto.

So I'm test driving the RX with both kids in the rear and hit a side street to turn around. At the next side street intersection I decide to u turn it and came up a little short. I through the car into reverse (at least I thought it was reverse) and the car moves forward. Huh, I try it again and the same thing. One more try and the same thing except by now the car is slowly inching towards the drainage ditch. The kids are asking way we're going off the road, I'm swearing at the gear box then it dawned on me...push down for reverse. I literally had to gun it in rears so I didn't end up in the ditch. The kids are laughing yelling do it again.

mmats69 11-15-2006 02:23 PM

i was on a first date with a girl i had been wanting to date for a while. we were leaving Sonic at my hometown in Selma and there is a slight hill up to a red light after you turn out of the Sonic. While running my mouth the light changes and I go to take off, clunk, stall. I play it off by saying "that doesn't happen often" then go to crank the car and it takes forever before it catches up. maybe only 5 seconds in reality but 5 years to me. she looks at me and says "that's not suppose to happen either is it." couldn't do anything but laugh.

Brettus 11-15-2006 02:46 PM

Took a mate for a quick ride down to the store in the wet . Thinking I would demonstrate my drifting skills I turned off DSC (first mistake).
As I hit a 90 degree corner in 1st gear I planted it to get the tail out only to find that I was very quickly pointing at the curb . So I let got the pedal completely (2nd mistake) . The car flicked around the opposite direction instantly & before I knew it I was hurtling down the wrong side of the road backwards - over the curb & into someones garden .

My mate has never let me forget it . this is the only time I ever lost control of the 8 & he happens to be the biggest blabbermouth on the planet .................

tiltmode43 11-15-2006 02:53 PM

It was embarrassing because of the amount of people around (even though nobody probably realized what was going on)

Another one - 3 chicks in the car and me and we're cruising down this super busy blvd. This was near when I first got the car keep in mind. Cruising in second and I let the clutch out a bit too fast. The car starts bucking forwards and back and the girls had no idea what was going on (none drove stick) Later one tried to learn (not on my 8 of course) and I had a blast ;-)

baseballgenius80 11-16-2006 10:26 AM

Another finding reverse story....

Three days after getting my 8 I had this problem. My previous two cars were both stick...so I know how to drive manual. However, I've never had a 6-speed with reverse setup this way. The dealer failed to show me reverse...and up until this day, I had not gotten myself into a situation needing to go in reverse, yeah surprising. So I'm sitting in the parking lot with my friend in the car at the grocery store we both used to work at. So all the employees know us, and we are right by the store entrance. I sat there for 15 minutes figuring out where reverse was. My friend was of no help since he had never driven a stick. Fun stuff. The next day I went to the dealer yelling at them about not giving me a full walk-over of the car...and recommended that in the future they do so for other buyers of the 8.

Cool-Blue-Dad 11-20-2006 09:40 AM

Hmmmm, can't think of a story of my 8 actually embarrasing me right now.....

It was a little embarrasing to take it in to get a new cat' just 3 weeks after I bought it. All my coworkers noticed the multi-day lack of my new, hot car and asked about it. Warrenty service? Already? That was made worse when I hit a deer just a couple of weeks later (clearly not the 8's fault at all). The co-workers decided I "couldn't keep that car out of the shop" and have hassled me ever since. Not really an 8-moment, more of a dork-co-worker moment.

The most embarassing thing I've done myself is get real excited to see an oncoming 8 in traffic and start trying to wave/honk/flash-hi-beams, only to realize I'm not driving my 8 right at that moment. :rolleyes

xxPurpleRx8xx 11-20-2006 01:08 PM

Most embarrassing moment in my 8...

...about 2 weeks after I got it, I went to the "ghetto mall" in Vegas to meet one of my friends who I hadn't seen in awhile. I pull up to the front of the mall in my 8, and get out to show off my system in the trunk (2 JL 10 W3's, Plexi, neon, all that lol)...

...when I go to park, I forget I left my trunk open and drove all around the parking lot with it up. When we got out I noticed it, closed it, and walked up to the mall entrance. When i got up there, three girls said "**cking show off, rich lil white girl"

...I walked in that entrance and out the Macy's exit and moved my car to a new spot on the opposite side of the building lol...

dbright007 11-21-2006 03:35 AM

A buddy of mine asked me for a ride to the airport - no small favor when u are talking fri afternoon traffic and getting in and out of the ATL airport. But I had my nice new 8 to show off and maybe traffic wouldn't be too bad.....
After showing it off a bit, pop the trunk with the key fob, load his suitcase and off we go.

Pull right up in front of the Delta terminal with about a ka-billion people walking around and across the drop off lanes, TONS of security eyeballing you, and cars all over the place doing the pull-up drop-off move-away dance. Get right in the middle of it, and he jumps out and I realize I only have a vague idea of where the trunk-pop is under the dash.
Buddy is just kind of staring at me like "what are u doing", people are honking, and now security is getting interested - so take a stab at it - and pop the hood.........

Onlookers where amused, Security was NOT.

xxPurpleRx8xx 11-21-2006 10:56 PM

^ive had my 8 for a year and everytime I go to park at the Bellagio (they check your trunk before u can park), it never fails...I ALWAYS pop my hood first lol

Krankor 11-22-2006 04:07 AM

Alright, I'll flaunt my ignorance. What are they checking your trunk for?

Took a girl to Sonic on your first date...now that is embarrasing! lol just playing

My most embarrasing 8 moment...4 fugly girls pull up next to me at 2 in morning and start waving and yelling nice car...i want nothing to do with them. I let off the clutch, spin the tires as the light goes green and out of there...then i see those lovely blue and red lights! girls drove by laughing and pointing at me as i was on the side of the road.

adamwzl 06-23-2009 08:43 AM

My most embarrasing 8 momentt... hmm. Well would have to be the first day I got it. I went to a party with friends etc. I decided to be DD for the night. (not normal) but I wasn't going to let anyone drive my 8 for a while.

As its time to leave the party I drive up to the house to get my friends because its pooring rain. This house is on a hill and small drive way. I have barely enough room to turn around and get out. But some how I managed to do so, just not so easy.. lol.

As my friends all hop in, everyone at the party was like damn nice car etc.. etc.. once everyone gets in they wouldnt stfu. I haven't figured out how to use the defroster yet. So I sat there in the driveway for a good 5 min. As the windows were slowly defogging I decided to go ahead and try my 6 point turn... Yea it was VERY tight.. I shoulda just made them walk to the bottom of the hill but it was all muddy and i didnt want that crap in my car.

So as I try to turn around stall out a good 5-6 times. First day with the 8 and first time really driving a manual car. Then finally I get to the point where its a clear shot. Take it out of reverse go into 1st and who show's up??? The cops to bust the party they were down the road full sirens and lighs about 4 cop cars. I was like F this were leaving. My friends drunk yelling etc in the car so I give it too much gas and end up fish tailing out almost hitting another car but I made with no scratches on the car and no injuries.

But I was pretty embarrased of squealing tires/ fish tailing out infront of the cops as they were pulling up the drive way. I wave to them as they go by.

We left at a good time. My friends ended up in jail for the night running from the cops. Even though their 21 and over they just decided to be dumb I guess..

CyberPitz 06-23-2009 10:35 AM

My most embarrassing was when I was pulling out onto a very busy road, and I thought I found the perfect place. I pull out and start driving and threw it into 3rd going about 30. Still slowly accelerating, I notice the traffic is coming up rather quick...quicker than I anticipated. Not wanting to be a dick that slows everybody down, I push the pedal down. A little too lazy to downshift . Well, I Get up to speed and throw it down to 4th....wait that was second! Let out clutch high revs are hit and I see crap fly out from behind me from the poor clutch.

Surprised it's still alive to this day.

hmm i think mine is me trying to give a hang loose sign to a fellow 8 driving by. but my fingers didnt cooperate with me, so it ended up me giving a middle finger to the the fellow 8 driver.

or when i was driving my mazda 3 for a month straight. then one day i had the urge to drive the 8. i thought my RPM needle was my speed needle (due to being use to the mazda 3), even though i was going 70mph, my rpm needle was like 4-5, which made me think i was going 40mph-50. so i thought i was loosing power etc. then i reliazed that the digital number is my MPH lol

I bet you felt like you had a major "FAIL" tattooed to your head after realizing you were reading the RPM tac as your speed..

My most embarrassing story was when i first got my 8 and i got into an argument with my parents about going to this party, they said no dont go but then eventually after alot of yelling they just wanted me out of the house. So i go out and get in the 8 and start it up. Not knowing i had to push down the shifter to get in reverse, so in 6th gear i roll down the drive way (my drive way is steep enough to just roll back but once i hit the pavement of the street i need to give it gas, it makes a valley from my drive way to the street.) So thinking im in reverse i get half way onto the street and realize im not really moving.... so after 10 unsuccessful tries i re-park the car and ask my dad to reverse it out for me.

for the record ive been driving a stick for 3+ years and since then ive learned to reverse it hahaha.

so you went backwards the entire length of your driveway in 6th gear? psst... there's a problem here... you should have stalled, not kept rolling. might want to get your tranny checked bud.

I just did something similar today. I jumped on the highway liesurely doing doing about 60 in 6th, and I wanted to do a quick bolt around this minivan in front of me. So I dropped her down into 4th to take off, but of course I caught 2nd because 4th is so close to 6th as it is. Luckily I didn't drop the clutch, but it grabbed hard enough to dip the nose and blip the rpm's up a fair bit. Don't know if anyone noticed, but I felt like a major D-bag.

my tranny is fine. i held the clutch in, like i said in my post my drive way is steep enough to roll back until the driveway meets the street... then i stalled from being in 6th.

czar 06-24-2009 08:53 AM

try this one, stalled and flooded the engine in the middle of the road between the off ramp for the highway and infront of the stop light, thankful wasnt the intersection ^_^

...bastard wouldnt restart either and i had paper new plates at the time, problem was the battery wasnt fully charged from being dead for a long time
