Mod Caused Big Problem

After i hit break in point with my car, i ordered greddy catback exhaust n k&n intake. When i got them installed 2 days later i got my engine light on. I went back n took out my intake (left my exhaust on) n put my stock intake back on. Engine light went off, and came back on in 3-5 days. I went to the dealership and they had no clue what was wrong. They restarted my battery to turn off my engine light, but it kept on coming back on. When i went back they found out my ecu wasnt fully updated, so they updated it. Engine light came back on and they said it was my fuel cap. Engine light off, engine light back on. This happened 7 times and the last time i went they replaced my whole fuel system and my engine light hasnt been on for the last month n a half.

I want to mod my rx-8 faster but i am worried if i get the hks intake it will cause another problem, (engine light) n i was wondering what u guys think?

I am thinking about doing hks intake, and flywheel (not sure what brand to go with any suggestions?), pulleys (not sure what brand to go with, any suggestions?)

Keep in mind all the work you're doing modding the exhaust and intake are only adding a few horsepower... nothing you're going to feel. It will sound great, but not doing much in the performance department. Even with the HKS + cat-less midpipe (more CELs) + greddy catback won't see much more than a 10-12Hp gain... not very much for spending $1500. Pulleys might throw more CEL's, and won't do much for performance either. If you're serious about adding horsepower you'll feel, save your money for a Greddy or other turbo system... but in my opinion the money is better spent on suspension and handling mods first.

^indeed. i myself got ateh rb cat-back exhaust, and the mazdaspeed flywheel rb pressure plate and clutch...she is much more livly now. not much added hp (only like 3-5 from the exhaust) but she accelerates a lot faster. which is soooo sweet. i'd go suspension first too. but if you want a more livly car think about a flywheel they are great. oh and no cel's

Correct!

Always start with suspension first, brakes second, and power last.

Get an OBD code reader of your very own - then no more guessing when the light comes on.

If you watch the Sunday paper you should be able to pick one up from an auto supply store for cheap, or even less if you have a Harbor Freight store in town.

I use a Davis Instruments "DriveRight" CarChip for reading codes and resetting the CEL lights. Too bad it will not work on the 8, yet. Not only does it function as a code reader it is also a data logger and will record all manner of stuff like hard accelerations, hard stops, the E/X version will even log a bunch of other stuff like engine load, throttle position, coolant temp, RPM, etc.

Good advice- many of us have this one - I love it. You can make a full-fledged real-time carputer with it if you wanted to...
