mirror housing gap

Hello everyone,

A few month lurker… but today I decided to swing by a dealer and take a close up look at the cars. The dealership had 5 05’s on the lot. All of which looked nice but I still get a little scared seeing the price. There was not a salesman around so I had some free time to walk around unhindered. Doing a couple passes at the car I noticed that the outside housing on the mirror seems to be separated on the car I was looking at, then I went and looked at the others that were on the lot and each one of the mirror housings seemed a bit separated from the car (I hope I am explaining this ok). When I would press against the housing there was a bit of give on each of the cars on both the passenger and drivers side mirrors, in some placed I could have easily slide in two stacked quarters in between the mirror housing the door, in others just a single width of a dime would fit, but in all cases there was a gap. Is this at all normal? The dealership was in Florida (if that would have any heat issues).

Thanks for your feedback,

Manner

Manner.....I just went down to the garage and took a look at my 8. I don't see a gap between the mirror housing and the shell of the car. Now, there is a slight gap on the mirror housing itself in the middle. This gap is the swivel point for the mirror. Hope I explained this clearly

I know of the gap you speak of. I have it on both sides and I'm in Cali.

Thanks for replies

Has anyone done anything about this on their cars or maybe it is not a common issue.

Doesn't bother me. I guess if it rattled or something I would do something but for now I'll assume its normal.

I hear the gap grows larger over time, but the max has been what you stated.

So far no problem here but I have seen it.

Let's wait to hear from those more expert than I am, but I recall a similar feature with my last two cars before the RX-8. Just a swivel joint--for when a moron walks into the mirror housing. It will twist, and then you just twist it back into its original, upright position. No big deal at all.

Same thing here....haven't noticed any issues with the gap, and it hasn't gotten larger over time.

Also, see the owners' manual. Two will get you ten that they describe it in there.

I have the gap only on the passenger side. It's about 1/8 inch. I went to 2 local dealerships to look at their cars and found many have the gap and many don't. During an oil change visit, my service writer simply ordered me an ENTIRE mirror housing (under warranty of course). It seems like all they'd have to do is take that plastic piece off, bend it in the opposite direction, and put it back together, but I was told they will not do that, that they would simply replace the ENTIRE housing. My next time in for service I was going to have it installed until my service writer said there's no guarantee the gap would disappear. At that point, I thought about some dipshit possibly scratching up my car around the door area and I decided to just keep what I have even with the gap. My gap has NOT gotten worse at all in 1 year of ownership.

If you do choose to have it replaced, it IS UNDER WARRANTY. Should be no big deal at all.
