Mileage Update-2006
#26
In my near 57,000 miles, I have only had the TSBs and recalls done ... other than routine maintenance of course. I have kept a gas mileage spreadsheet for every fillup (yes, I am ****), and my overall average since I've had the car is 22.82 mpg. I have never flooded it (yet!), though the body shop flooded it when I had it there after being rear-ended.
I have not noticed any loss of power, and I'm very happy with the car so far. Keeping fingers crossed that I can keep it for many more miles!

August 23rd, 2003. 59,923 miles. Minor recall work done under warranty, front brake pads replaced under warranty, never flooded, tracked often when new, now not so much, but thats cause I dont have enough time. Still get a tingle in my pants every single morning when I start it up.

Sept '04 (bought with 15,000 miles on it) Currently has 40,800 miles. Just TSB and recall work done on it. Lots of the TSBs, but I got one of the earlier build dates and am pretty particular about squeaks, broken plastic, etc.
I get ~18mpg mostly city, and ~21mpg when mostly hwy. Lowest 13mpg and highest 22mpg.

8th of May 2004.
Hi-power, manual transmission.
Just over 40.000 km (about 25.000 miles)
Driven soft, medium, hard and very hard depending of the mood, road type and traffic conditions. 3 times on very demanding tracks (2 x Jarama and 1 x Montmelo both in Spain) and almost daily 20 km of mountain curly road..
Not a single problem, just the recalls for minor TSB´s.
Average mileage so far is 13.2 l/100 km (17.82 MPG).
No loss of power or performance. Everything goes more than fine.
Cheers

N.B. LambertRX8 makes 5230 miles/month at that pace his car will hit 200,000 miles on Dec 2007!

I didn't give details, so here it is:
Lifetime avg fuel economy (almost completely city):
19.2 mpg (I stopped writting it down long ago so it might be closer to 19.5 now)
Problems:
Brake noise, grabby 2nd gear, almost turned off on me twice, tsb's and recalls. (no flooding)
As I said, I have about 8.9K now and I got it December 24 2004 (base 6spd black).
Other than those few and MINOR issues...my 8 has been pretty close to perfect.

Just turned 100,000 miles, officially 100,735.
Still getting 18-19 mpg hwy.
No major problems or repairs.
TSM and recalls.
Had plugs changed around 80,000 miles.
On 3rd set of tires:
OEM Bridgestones: 30,000 miles
Fuzion: 60,000 miles
Nankang: currently
Mostly highway miles, 200 miles a day commute for about 14 months. (avg 80mph)
Starting to notice rattle, rumble, marble sound around 5K rpm on highway driving. Doesn't seem to come from engine but rather from underariage someplace. I am thing maybe a heat shield, are there any on the 8?
Also hearing a rattle int the back seat, almost like a loose washer bouncing around. Any ideas?
Other than that still runs good.
If Mazda wouls like to take mine for research purposes I will trade for a newer one.

^The rattle is the intake manifold. Seems like it is starting to become a normality. I get it at 7k at about 22k miles.
Mazda studying your car would be a good deal.

When I stomp on the gas it begins to loose a bit of power and stutter when I reach 80-90mph.
Could this be associated with gas. 87 vs 90+ octane?

Insanely Yellow
Hi Lambert: That's probably intake manifold leakage causing both the noise and the stutter issue.
My car: 2004, delivery 7/8/2004. 24,346 miles today. Just getting broken in compared to yours!

Major issue that just started popping up. They have to remove the engine to fix it. $3k+
