mechanical rattle from rear of car

Well, I am somewhat at a loss here. I had the engine and clutch replaced about 8000 miles ago and ever since, there has been a metallic "rattle" sound coming from the rear of the car when I disengage the clutch. The rattle is intermittent, but kind of annoying, as well as being a point of concern for me. Any chance they screwed something up when they reassembled everything? I've checked my trunk and back seat for anything metallic that could be rattling (i.e. tire changing kit) but can't find anything. Anyone have this happen to them or have any ideas? Thanks!

Make sure the exhaust is attached at all 4 hanger locations and hasn't slipped off of one of them.

Did they replace your engine mounts when they did the engine?

Also make sure your lug nuts are tight.

If this sound occurs when the clutch is disengaged (pedal is pressed in) it could be a defective release bearing, lack of lubrication on the spline, of lack of lubrication where the release fork attaches to the pivot ball stud.
Does the sound seem to occur inside the transmission?

Ahh... that's what I get for skimming through that post
In that case, see if the exhaust hanger is tapping against the differential.
I had to cut mine back a little to eliminate my rattle noise.

I actually had my engine munts replaced about a year ago, so I don't think they replaced them this time.

The rattle does seem to be coming from the vicinity of the rear passenger seat/wheel well.

I'll check the exhaust hanger, though.

Thanks for the input everyone!

$10 says it's the exhaust hanger. I have the same thing, but was told it'd be a pain in the *** to properly fix. At least it's not something substantive (most likely).

Well, I took my car in for an oil change and had them look at the exhaust while it was in there. According to the service manager, they did a visual inspection and don't see a problem. Her thought was that there is a rock or something inside the exhaust, causing the rattle. They recently replaced the cat, might that have something to do with it?
