Mazda, why do you torture me with packages only? aftermarket homelink mirror?

Hey everybody, new to the forums, thinking about an rx8, got some questions

My current car has the homelink mirror. Being as I live in an apartment with a gate and a garage, losing that is gonna be a PITA.

I don't mind paying for the GT. Really want the homelink. upgraded stereo...sure, why not. Sunroof...cool. Here's the problem: at my height, I REALLY need that extra headroom up top. The GT just isn't cutting it.

Frankly, I don't think it'd be that difficult for the dealership to order the part from the service dept. and then install it, but I doubt I'd get them to go for that.

So, anyone know of aftermarket stuff for this (probably) highly UNrequested item? I've searched the net, checked out rotaryextreme and a few other places, nothing.

Thanks

Well so far I tried using both mirrors from the Mazda 6. And neither one fit. I've emailed Mazda service who knows what good that will do..

The annoying thing is this: The Mazda6 Mirror with homelink and compass was like $230. And included the wiring needed to get power to it. I was quoted over 300 for the RX8 mirror without the power wiring..

It's simple, tell the dealer that unless your car comes with it you're not signing.. I wish I had..

I hope you pull this off. It's lousy to stick you with thousands of dollars in unwanted upgrades just to get a $200 mirror. And BTW, the "upgraded" Bose system stinks; def not worth the price. Do a search of this forum and you will find much discussion about it. So abandon the sunroof due to your height, find an aftermarket stereo upgrade, and good luck with the mirror. It'll be one cool car by the time you're done.

Welcome to the forum!

I had the same problem with height, but I decided to work with the sun roof. But I've had previous cars since having Home Link systems that didn't have it included. For these vehicles, I found a very small programable remote at Sears. It's like 2"x1"x.5". I realize that you would need two, but beleive me with their small size, they can be hidden just about anywhere.

I've never heard of a dealer breaking packages to make a sale. So I would doubt that woudl go very far, but you never know.

Best of luck!

I don't think it's up to the dealer on the packages...because from what I understand, they get the cars with what is already on them. With the exception of minor things like appearance package, spoiler, some minor stereo stuff...but as far as the rest of the stuff goes? Homelink, Moonroof, Leather, Xenon headlights...they either get to the dealer's lot that way, or they don't.

thanks guys for all the info.

Update:
I spoke to a guy at another dealership (over the phone).

He said he had a GS with the appearance package (spoiler, etc) that had the homelink mirror. Also said that he could NOT order the part and install it there, but (if I didn't like the one he had) he would search inventory across the state and find me another one. And if that didn't work, he could order a GS from Mazda and have them put on the homelink mirror at the factory (but that would obviously take awhile)

Is this guy just blowing smoke up my a$$? The first dealership told me they had tried to order particular items in the past, but Mazda would only let them order packages.

Also, anyone with the appearance package...does it include the homelink mirror?

Thanks

I have the AP. On the window sticker it says :

Appearance Package
-Front Air Dam
-Side and Rear Areo Flares

So no, I don't think so.

oh wait fan said gs. that makes him canadian. so 2 things you should know. there were only700 cars available in canada for this year, so the chances of you finding the car/package/color option that you want are pretty slim, since you weren't one of the people who ordered from day one. your best bet is to take the car you can live with or order and wait.

Here you go: http://www.mitocorp.com/homelink_mirrors.htm

These mirrors are the same ones offered by Mazda through some OEM aggreement I assume. I kinda like the one with homelink, compass, outside temp & map lights! I ordered one of these and had it installed on my Toyota Tundra. Very cool. Cost was $400.00 installed.

Same thing here. More of a do it yourself kit.

In the US, he would be blowing smoke. I tried to order my car with the mirror only, and the salesman said that he would have NO WAY to do that. It was a package only thing three months ago.
